Brandon Phillips’ comments about the Cardinals refreshing
Despite it generally being a boring sport to watch, I love baseball. America’s pastime, indeed.
But players have become too damn nice to each other. How many times do we have to see a runner reach base and watch as a member of the opposing team pats them on the rear, gives them a back rub and straightens out their jock for them? Enough already.
Heading into a pivotal series against division rival St. Louis on Monday, Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phillips took the opportunity to discuss how much he hated the Cardinals. And dude didn’t hold back.
“We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear – I hate the Cardinals.”
Finally, a baseball player with a backbone. I don’t care if his comments were justified or not – it’s about time someone stoke the rivalry flames again in baseball. This isn’t a softball beer league or Babe Ruth Baseball – for the love of Pete Rose, it’s Major League Baseball. Where’s the hatred? Where are the division rivalries? Outside of the Red Sox and Yankees, and Giants and Dodgers, there are none.
Phillips just made this three-game set between the Reds and Cardinals even more interesting than it already was. I’m not suggesting that every player goes out and calls the other team names at the start of a new series, but it’s nice to see some life being breathed into the game again. Did you see that game last night? Chris Carpenter was ready to punch a hole through Brendan Ryan’s esophagus after the shortstop grabbed the wrong mitt in the first inning. Do you think Carpenter wanted to beat the Reds after what Phillips said?
Good for you, Brandon Phillips. Now try not getting your ass kicked tonight.

Brandon Phillips is a punk. Oh, and so is Cueto.
I lost respect for Phillips, He has o class and is a little bitch himself.
I think Anthony might be brandon’s little bitch the way he has his love fest with him. Just saying…
lmao. Great commentary. I’m a Cards fan and I think Phillips is an idiot, but as you said, “this isn’t a softball beer league.” Sure added a little spice to game 2!
”division rivalries? Outside of the Red Sox and Yankees, and Giants and Dodgers, there are none”.
Thats interesting because were I come from the cardinals and cubs are rivalries..
Talk about getting bitch slapped. Go Cards!!!
The rivalry and intensity is welcome however I find it funny that Phillips was whining about someone else being a whiner. Instead of showing by his play he complained and then got stomped.
Phillips is a joke, and it looks as if he is now Molina’s Bitch! Cueto surely deserves a suspension for his little “Bitch” kicking players in the face. Not a real mans way of defending yourself!!
Thank you Brandon Phillips for waking up the cardinals…tied for 1st now, ha ha
I completely agree with Mr. Stalter. I am tired of everyone grabbing ass and talking about how these guys have a great team and blah blah blah. I like the trash talk; it spices up a relatively boring game. A couple of comments for the above Cardinal fans, because we know you idiots are otherwise you wouldn’t have jumped all over this post. Foz, first off I doubt Phillips cares how much respect he lost from you and secondly if you are going to rip someone’s post do so intelligently. Fan, I would recommend grabbing a dictionary before you post. I DON’T know “were” you come from, but where I come from I’m a Cubs’ fan and we suck so there is no rivalry (this year anyway).
Cueto had nothing else to do, after being thrown on his back into the net by someone twice his size, Jason deserved that gash above his eye and the cleats in his face for picking on one of the smallest guys he could find…
and rolen is just a monster, taking half the cardinals down to the ground by himself.
Molina started it, thats proven by the video. Rolen held him back and carpenter threw the first punch. Cardinals punk a$$es are 100% start of the fight and therefore responsible for it…
Good for Brandon Phillips? Are you kidding me? Rivalry is great…but come on…put your money where is your mouth is. You didn’t get a single hit in the series, so you looked like an idiot and a sore loser with your comments. You have Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen, who if you ask them, would have preferred to play and retire in St. Louis. Walt Jocketty your GM also won a World Series with us. You don’t know what good fans are, and what good baseball is. You would never hear crap like that come out of our players, and if you did, they would be benched for them.
Your an idiot and so is Brandon Phillips, and perhaps you need to learn how to better report on baseball drama than to condone a player for making such remarks about another team and the players. What the hell did you expect to happen?
GO CARDINALS!! I BLEED CARDINAL RED! BEST FANS, REPORTERS, COACHES, AND PLAYERS IN BASEBALL!!
Talk about Phillips being a punk, how about Molina getting into his face before his at bat? Then Carpenter getting in the face of Baker after ripping his teammates the previous day. I couldn’t agree with Phillips more, the Cards are a bunch of…well you know.
Kaysie,
You read one of my articles and automatically come to a conclusion that I don’t know how to report about baseball “drama.” Talk about being shortsighted and lazy.
By the way, it’s “you’re” – “you’re” an idiot.
Kaysie,
How about Carpenter? He rips on his own teammates then verbally attacks Baker after the benches cleared, enough so that Baker’s players slam him into the backstop. You Cardinal fans are all the same, please take off your (and that would be the correct usage of your) blinders and open your (again correct usage) eyes to the fact that the post was meant to commend Phillips on being opinionated and not droning on about everyone loving everyone.
1. Phillips started the whole thing by running his mouth. 2. Phillips goes up to the plate in the first inning and taps Molina on the shin guard as though they’re pals. Molina called Phillips out for saying what he said about the Cardinals. Phillips started the whole dammed thing. Cueto was kicking like a little girl except he was kicking with steel spikes on his feet. He could have kicked someone’s eye out.
Reds fans don’t try to defend your team for the way they have been acting. Phillips called the Cardinals little bitches but the Reds have come out looking far worse than the Cardinals in the first two games. Even if the Reds win the third game the Cardinals have made a statement. The Cardinals are not going away. Be aware of this too….Dusty Baker had guys with the same attitude in Chicago and San Francisco. He always loses in the end. Even if you make the playoffs, someone always smokes his teams. In 2003 it was the Marlins. In 2002 it was the Angels. Eventually his teams and his pitchers usually self destruct.
It’s history. Look it up.
Kaysie,
If memory serves me correctly didn’t La Russa fall asleep drunk at the wheel in Fla? But greatest coaches right?
@ Fan
How about a little baseball namenclature savy. Teams within a single division are often referred to as “Division Rivals”. (See also NFL)
This is irrespective of the level of hatred for one another, the long tradition between two teams etc (everything that makes a strong rivalry).
Are the Reds and Cardinals a premier rivalary? Most certainly not, but they are division rivals.
This is not to be confused with a cross divisonal rivalary. (See Future Big Ten Football Scheduling or current SEC format)
Zack – well said.
Terry – I agree with most of your points – especially about Baker destroying pitcher’s arms (a notion shared by many).
But I have to say, I find it a little humorous that a Cardinals fan (I’m assuming you’re a Cards fan – correct me if I’m wrong) is pointing out that Baker “always loses in the end” when it was his Giants that beat La Russa’s Cardinals in the ’02 NLCS to advance to the World Series.
That said, I’m fully aware that Baker can kiss La Russa’s title rings. I just find your comments interesting considering the last big head-to-head matchup between those two went Baker’s way…
Hey Stalter, you’re obviously not a serious baseball fan if you think the sport is “boring.” If what constitutes excitement to you is irresponsible trash-talking and brawling, become a hockey fan. By the way, rivalry doesn’t necessarily include mean-spiritedness and blood-drawing. Ever hear the term “sportsmanship”?
Hey George – I never said that baseball is boring. Go back and read what I wrote:
Despite it generally being a boring sport to watch, I love baseball.
Do you watch every pitch of every game? Or do you generally stick to your favorite team’s games, national games and postseason games? Do you watch Orioles-Royals in the middle of August?
As it pertains to what I wrote, you’re reaching with your comments. Plus, you’re bleeding what happened last night into this discussion, but I wrote this 8 hours before the brawl.
The Cardinals are a bunch of little bitches. Nothing new here. The only player that’s not a bitch on that team is Albert Pujols. If there would have been an actual brawl the Reds would have destroyed the Cardinals.
Ya you got stomped again. The Cards own the Reds, especially this year. Have fun watching us win the pennant, the Reds suck.
I’m pretty sure the Cards will self destruct. The middle relief pitching sucks. Any team that gives up 18 runs to the Astros isn’t doing anything this year.
2 hours till the sweep, can’t wait!!!!
Jeez, looks like Cards fans are whiny bitches. The players might just be playing to their fan base.
Face it… Brandon Phillips nailed it!
The Cardinals are exactly like the Texas Longhorn football team. The only thing better would have been if Brandon had continued and had commented about the Cardinals’ fans whining just as much as their team does. Cards fans are in everyone else’s face when the Cardinals are winning and disappear when they are losing. Oh, what a coincidence, that makes Cardinals’ fans exactly like the Longhorns’ fans.
Compare Cards’ fans behavior to Reds’ fans, who are in everyone else’s faces when the Reds are doing well and are in the Reds’ faces when they are not. Then there are the Cubs’ fans… waving their foam bear claws even in the midst the 102nd consecutive season season of despair and woe.
Thank you,wiggidy.
Hey, Reds’ fans… this would be a great time to let Bud Selig know that we need revenue sharing in MLB similar to what the NFL has. Otherwise, before long you will see all of your young players wearing Yankees’ and Red Sox’ uniforms.
Baseball’s executives wonder why they have become a second-class citizen to the NFL. It has happened largely because it is rare for a small market team to field a roster that is as good as that of the large market teams and, worse, it is impossible for the small market team to keep a great roster together. Compare that to the NFL where several small market teams (e.g. Colts, Steelers, Packers, etc.) have been good or great for long periods.
The Indianapolis Colts have won 89 games and lost 23 over the past seven regular seasons. No small-market MLB team can even hope to have a string of successful seasons such as that. NFL small market teams may fail through mismanagement but at least they do have a chance to succeed.
Note to Phillips / Reds: STFU
Love, YM & the Cards
YM and the CArds?
YMCA!
When did the Village People start wearing baseball uniforms?
Somehow I had missed it when you slyly left the ‘A’ off your name, YMC.
Longtime Cardinal fan. Go cards. I have to admit, Brandon Phillips comment did nothing more to me than make me laugh. You can’t take a guy like that seriously. He sounds like a thug and he acts like a thug. Therefore, he’s a thug.
I’m sorry if other fans feel overwhelmed with our enthusiasm for winning teams but it’s just what we do. We love baseball. We love to see good games and we become enthusiastic about ones where we come out on top. Cards fans love nothing more than competitive teams. We want to see the Cubs win (makes winning that much more fun) and I’m loving this competition with the Reds. Frankly, I just love good baseball and the Cardinals are my team.
No whining, just facts, just wins, just history, just championships, just class. Of course little bitches wouldn’t know anything about that, would you Thor, wiggidty, Sam, and dmb!!!!
Foz, have you ever heard of the term “comma splice”? Do they teach you English in St. Louis?
Cardinal fans do plenty of whining when their team is winning and disappear when the Cardinals are losing.
Cardinals’ fans: what will you say when the story finally breaks about steroid boy’s steroid use? You know he did it, don’t you? I’m not Pujoling your leg, you know.
I am not a Reds fan. I am not a Cubs’ fan. I am an unCardinals’ fan.
Where are you, Reds’ fans? Are you going to leave me here fighting the evil Cardinal contingent on my own? If you do, I’ll start thinking of insults for the Queen City (a.k.a. Porkopolis) too.
UnCardinal fans… let’s pool our resources and buy some land in southern Illinois across the Mississippi river from the arch. Then we build a mile-high statue of an old guy with a croquet mallet and ball.
Or:
We buy the arch, build an identical one beside it, and paint them both yellow. We can suspend a giant sign across them that reads “Billions [create your own joke here]”.
“It’s been a pleasure entertaining you, folks. See you next time around. Good night…”
Perhaps Brandon Phillips’ comments would carry a bit more weight or credibility if his team could win a single game of the series or do better than 5-10 against the cardinals all year, or if he could do better than 2-14 in the series with only 1 RBI. Everyone knows that if you are going to insult someone, especially to the media, then you should probably be able to back it up. Brandon Phillips should have known that Yadier Molina was not going to put up with any nonsense from him. Congratulations Phillips, the entire baseball world outside of Cincinnati is now against you and you have no one to blame but yourself.
For those interested (especially Cardinal fans), I did a follow up post this morning:
http://www.scoresreport.com/2010/08/11/thus-far-the-reds-look-like-
the-real-btches/
Oh and Foz, nothing has ever cut through the core of me like you saying I’m Phillips’ bitch. But I’m all cried out now…
SJS, you make some salient points. However, you did overreach a bit when you state that the entire baseball world is against Phillips.
To be honest, most of the baseball world is outside our little ole midwest fish bowl… and they do not care about Phillips. The fans and media on the coasts think all of us in “flyover” country are their bitches.
Let’s hope that, in the fall, whether it is the Reds or the Cardinals, that the folks from flyover country are the ones celebrating.
On that we can agree, Thor. I am rather sick of east coast dominance whether it is the Phillies or the Yankees. I’m sure you feel the same way. Here is to the Phillies not appearing in the World Series for a third straight time.
Foz says “No whining, just facts, just wins, just history, just championships, just class. Of course little bitches wouldn’t know anything about that, would you Thor, wiggidty, Sam, and dmb!!!!”
I guess the class he was mentioning was only in reference to the team, not the fans. Nice job asshole. I’m so sick of Cardinals fans thinking they are above everyone else just because the media hype of St Louis being a good “baseball town”. Get over yourselves. History? Tradition? Look at the record books, jackass.
Now that I got that out of the way, back to the topic at hand. It’s good to see a little trash talk, even if the Cardinals and their fans are too sensitive to take it. Baseball needs some rivalries other than Yankees-Redsox, Cardinals-Cubs, and Dodgers-Giants. Inter-league play has done nothing to spur that on whatsoever, so this is kind of refreshing. I also think Molina did exactly the right thing…don’t talk about my team then try to be my boy. The only thing that would have made it better is if he had the balls to punch Philips in the face right there at the plate. I do wish Philips could have backed it up a little, but that’s baseball…stud one day, goat the next. His comments would carry a little more weight if they could beat the Cards head to head but who cares…if the Reds win the division, it would hurt 10x more. After reading all the shithead posts here, nothing would make me happier than the Reds coming on to knock these arrogant bastards from St. Louis and their juiced up first baseman out of the playoffs.
Hey, but that’s just me.
I agree with most of your points, T-Bone.
In one of my posts, I remarked about steroid boy. I am not surprised that MLB tries to give him a squeaky-clean image (as MLB badly needs a clean superstar) but I am amazed that so many seem to buy into what is being sold. I was right about A-fraud eight years before that story broke and I am more certain about that certain Cardinal than I was about A-roid.
About rivalries: as I mentioned earlier, revenue sharing is needed in MLB a la the revenue sharing in the NFL. If real NFL-type revenue sharing existed in MLB, teams in small markets would be able to afford to retain the star players that they have developed… teams (both the home town favorites and the visiting minions from hell) would develop more lasting identities… this would build rivalries. Familiarity breeds contempt; a certain degree of contempt is necessary for a good rivalry.
There are a few rivalries of import that have been created by intraleague baseball. The Cubs-White Sox rivalry has been great. Remember when Michael Barrett K.O.’d A.J. Pierzynski? The New York teams have a pretty good rivalry. The California teams, with the exception of San Diego, have a good natural rival in the opposite league.
Unless your team, however, is in a metropolitan area large enough to have two teams, your team does not have a good natural rival in the opposite league… and no rivalry will ever develop because you will only play a few games against a team each year at most. Again… familiarity breeds contempt; a certain degree of contempt is necessary for a good rivalry.
Mr. Stalter,
I’m delighted that the only thing you found incorrect about my post was one misspelling. As for Carpenter, players disagree and have bad chemistry at times. Carpenter was wrong also for blowing up, but I don’t know how others could say Molina started it. Phillips taped his bat on Molina after making those remarks the previous day. I’d be shocked if Yadi didn’t get in his face. Truth is Phillips was wrong, and the Cardinals played it out on the field by sweeping the Reds. And Mr. Stalter, how can any “reporter” think a “professional” All- Star athlete is a great guy for spouting off such profane garbage. I would say the same thing if it had been a Cardinal player spouting off too. Play it out on the field…not in the press!! I’m disappointed that a reporter would condone such behavior by an athlete. I don’t think the Reds fans are particularly proud of Phillips or found his comments “refreshing.” Phillips and Cueto should be benched and fined, and next time the Reds want to show that they are the better team, perhaps they should win 2 out of three first. Maybe you should interview Edmonds and Rolen about Phillips remarks. I don’t think they would agree with his views of the St. Louis Cardinals. DON’T HATE…APPRECIATE!
Just for the record….Tony LaRussa and Dusty Baker did prolong the scuffle…they have a long history of not getting along. I still stick by my comments that Tony LaRussa is a great coach. He’s a proven winner with St. Louis and other clubs. What any of these players or coaches do in their personal lives is up for public ridicule, DMB. You’re right about LaRussa, but I thought we were talking baseball. And as someone earlier wrote, Cardinal fans want to see the Cubs do well. It’s a fun rivalry for both sides. When the Cubs were in the playoffs, I know I was rooting for them. I sat and watched the 4th game of the WS as the Red Sox eliminated us at the old Busch Stadium. I just like baseball, and I was happy for the Sox. My husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary soon, and when he asked me where I wanted to go for (destination) our 20th I said, the bleachers at Wrigley field to watch the Cubs and Cards play. There’s just nothing like it : )
Mrs. McIntyre,
The grammar wasn’t the only thing I found wrong with your post – it was the fact that you called a stranger an “idiot” just because you disagreed with his opinion. Furthermore, I guarantee you this is the only thing you’ve ever read of mine. You could agree with 90% of my opinions, but because you’re a Cardinals fan and I wrote this piece about Phillips, I’m an idiot. That’s not fair.
Did you check out this yet?
http://www.scoresreport.com/2010/08/11/thus-far-the-reds-look-like-
the-real-btches/
Probably not. This is why I threw out “shortsighted” and “lazy” in my first response to you.
I’m not a reporter. That’s one thing that is misunderstood about bloggers – we’re not reporters. Reporters actually report on something – a game, an event, etc. I’m not reporting anything. We throw out a topic, share our opinion and then let fine folks like yourself either agree or disagree. It’s unfortunate that some people can’t disagree without name-calling, but that’s how things go.
I would implore you to re-read my post from a less emotional state. I didn’t say that Phillips was a good guy, nor did I insinuate it. I took the stance that he made the series more interesting than it already was and would you disagree? Was that not a thrilling series despite the fact that the Cardinals beat the hell out of them three straight days? That was a freaking blow out series outside of Game 2, yet I know I was all over that game yesterday. And other non-Cardinals/Reds fans probably felt the same.
Congratulations on your 20th Anniversary. I’m from Chicago and have been to Wrigley many of times – you’ll love it.
Note to Phillips & Reds: Like I was sayin’ all mouth no game. Owned. Next time come to play and STFU.
Love, YM & the Cards
When did sports fans become so sensitive that if anyone says anything bad about their team that person is an a-hole? Philips’ comments were right on the mark…the Cardinals are a bunch of whiney bitches, just like their manager. And Molina’s response was perfect, standing toe to toe with the guy who just put down his team. It generated interest in a series that outside of St. Louis and Cincy, nobody really cared about. Yet the jokers who comment here don’t even understand that because they failed 3rd grade reading comprehension. They read the headline and decide to go off.
The Cards used to be a team anyone can root for but after reading this garbage, I hope Cincy comes back and knocks them out.
all u ppl need to watch the videos and shoulda been watchin the game i seen it the comments made were NOT professional Brandon Phillips took a shot at yadi by his actions you uptight pricks are avoiding them facts and brandon phillips in my mind shoulda had to back his ass up if he can talk he can walk we are jumpin on it because we know whats up and another thing who is on top right now yea cardinals if they are a joke why r they in the top spot in the nl central can u answer that for me u cubs and cincinatti fans nevermind I already know cause the cards have the players to get it done also cuetos actions were ignorant he shoulda been knocked the hell out by larue
I love living in St.Louis but really hate being a Reds fan (born and raised in Ohio years ago) living here. I’ll tell ya, there are a lot of Reds fans here. I know a lot of home grown St.Louis natives that are Reds fans. All of us have the same opinion. We all think the Cards are Whiny ass bitches as well. “Cards, Cards, Cards”. No matter how bad the Reds have been the last 10 years, and when the Cardinals make the playoffs last year, we just CAN’T root for redbirds. We absolutely despise the Cardinals, and actually root for the Cubs when they play them. Labor day weekend be watching in the stands for a group of guys with Cardinals jerseys on and the name on the back says, “Whiny Bitch” or “Little Bitch”. We have a group of 10 of us who happen to have seats right behind the Cardinals dugout all three games. This will be awesome. Probably get killed, but… “Freedom of speech”.. Right Brandon ?
ok ok Brandon Phillips is a awesome the cards are losers cuz that won,t win the NL cuz the cry to damn much
Ok first of all i am a die-hard cardinals fan!!! I watch every game and have always supported them win or lose… which is something some of you obviously cannot comprehend. T-bone, I am going to assume that you have never been to a cards game at Busch stadium. If you had you would understand why St. Louis is indeed a great baseball town. Whether the cards are having a great season or a shitty one that stadium is filled to the nosebleeds from practice before the game to the last pitch of the game. That goes for you too Thor, cardinals baseball fans never disappear when things are going badly I really have no idea what you’re talking about. Every cardinal fan that I know of would proudly wear a cards jersey into a baseball game even if they knew the cards were going to lose. I do agree with Stalter, however, that the fight made for good TV which I understand was the message he was trying to convey. I’m all for getting along but baseball is a competition with enemies, not everyone is going to be friends… and they shouldn’t be, which is why Phillips should have known better than to try and be two-faced with Yadi. You can’t call someone a whiney bitch and then act like your friends. One of my best friends is the cardinals bat boy and he told me that Phillips had the nerve to say hey and tap Molina on the shin guard. If Yadi had taken that laying down I would have been ashamed… thankfully Yadi is a stud and doesn’t take shit. So Molina stood up and said “I’m not your bitch”… which is completely justified I believe. Personally I enjoyed the change of pace that the fight brought to the game, and thankfully no one was too seriously hurt (with the exception of Jason LaRue). Although obviously I vehemently disagree with Phillips’ comments, he has freedom of speech and can say whatever the hell he wants to. I’m just saying next time he should probably walk the walk if he’s going to talk the talk. I would also like to thank him for pissing off the cardinals bad enough that they swept the reds!!!!!
(p.s. Thor and all of the rest of you who are harping on the correct spelling of words… it’s a comment not a fucking English paper get over it)
Where oh where have the big mouthed cardinals fans gone…oh where oh where can they be?
I thought the Cardinals were supposed to run away with the NL Central after this incident? Now they’re in danger of not even winning the wildcard? I guess it wasn’t Phillips who couldn’t back up his comments…more like the Cardinals and their fans.
The good news is it will give Pujols a longer off season to get off the juice.
LOL @ T-Bone “The good news is it will give Pujols a longer off season to get off the juice.”
1. You are a dumbass
2. Brandon Phillips is a racial slur
3. How does it feel to be no hit in game 1 of the playoffs?
