Will Quinn be the odd man out in Denver?
After the Broncos’ traded multiple picks (rather foolishly in my opinion) in order to select Tim Tebow in the first round of last week’s draft, Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports wonders which quarterback will likely be the odd man out in Denver.
7. Who is the odd quarterback out in Denver?
In the perfect world, Tim Tebow would be on the roster to sit and learn and develop with nonstop NFL coaching. But he has to get some snaps, too, and the No. 3 quarterback rarely ever sees those. So you can bet that Tebow is going to get an opportunity to show he can be the backup with the Denver Broncos this season. And frankly, it’s not out of the realm of possibility he could swipe the starting job. It’s unlikely, but you can’t rule it out. The one guy who seems to suddenly be on the outside looking in is Brady Quinn. He was acquired for a low price – running back Peyton Hillis and fairly meaningless late-round picks in 2011 and 2012 – and has very little starting experience. So if you are going to deprive someone of practice reps, who are you going to pick? Your veteran starter Kyle Orton, your first-round pick in Tebow, or a guy who cost you almost nothing in Quinn? Seems like an easy answer.
What I don’t get is why the Broncos traded for Quinn in the first place. I understand they didn’t give up very much for him, but the trade for Tebow in the first round was very calculated. They kept trading back in order to acquire more picks so they could then trade up to select Tebow, so obviously they had a game plan. But what is their strategy now? Orton’s contract expires at the end of the year and Quinn’s expires in 2011. So maybe they’re planning on keeping all three quarterbacks and hoping Tebow emerges as the starter in either 2011 or 2012.
Either way, Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders have created a fine mess for themselves in Denver. They have one average quarterback in Orton, one below average backup in Quinn and one massive project in Tebow. As Robinson points out, if the Broncos hope to develop Tebow then they’ll need to get him reps in practice and that means making him the backup. Which makes Quinn useless.
I know the Broncos are high on Tebow, but I have a feeling that this team will be in the market for a franchise-caliber quarterback sooner than they think.

I suspect that they were high on Tebow from the start, but there’s no guarantee that they’d get him, so Quinn (another guy they probably like) was some insurance in case Tebow ended up elsewhere. Now they have a couple of prospects (I’d still consider Quinn a prospect given how the lights often go on late for QBs) and the Broncos are hoping that one pans out. Like the article said, they got Quinn for cheap, so there’s no harm in acquiring him.
My point is that they clearly wanted a developmental quarterback right? So why trade for Brady Quinn in the first place? They had to have liked other quarterbacks outside of Tebow, even if he was their first choice.
Isn’t Quinn still developmental? He’s just 25 and has shown some flashes of good play in the last couple of seasons.
I just think that they saw that he could be had for cheap, then also were able to draft Tebow, so they’re hoping that one of the two blossoms into a good starter in the NFL. If they had given up a lot for him, I’d agree with you, but since he was so cheap, what’s the downside?
Yes, Quinn is still developmental. So why do they need two developmental QBs? Why, when they knew they were going to target a developmental QB in the draft, do you then trade for another developmental QB?
The Broncos have now traded five draft picks and one running back for two developmental QBs, one of which may be dumped at some point over the next two seasons. I know they didn’t give up much for Quinn, but shouldn’t he have been their developmental QB?
I guess you’re right in saying that hey, they didn’t give up much for Quinn so no big deal if he doesn’t pan out. And I’ll fully admit that I hated the Tebow draft day trade, so maybe that’s clouding the issue for me too. But that said, I still don’t like their strategy here. I think Quinn becomes useless and even if all the Broncos wind up parting with are two late round picks and Hillis, they still gave up those three components to get a QB that they would up discarding anyway.
Maybe the Broncos are looking at Quinn as a somewhat capable backup who can develop into a starter. Does it hurt to have two developmental QBs? Maybe they’ll push each other.
Orton is a poor man Quinn and I mean he is older, slower, and less athletic.
The thing with tebow is his build and power.
He has a stronger, albeit less techincal, arm than Quinn and Orton. Quinn the “now” Tebow is the next guy. Orton just like in Chicago is good enough to get it done if needed.
1. Quinn
2. Orton
3. Tebow
next year
Tebow
Quinn
????
Tebow is a stud!!! His drive, work ethic, and dedication is so intense I can see him eventually playing a key role on the team! And as his future wife I will be so proud of him as I cheer from the sidelines or the skybox – wherever he would rather me sit! haha
Even if they put Tebow as third string this year, put Quin as starter next year with Tebow as backup… then they’re set for Tebow to start in 2012. He doesn’t get many, if any, real reps this year unless Orton goes down with a major injury.
I’m thinking that this year Brandstater is the odd man out – next year Orton is the odd man out.
Brandstater is the odd man out. Kyle Orton can’t throw a 20 yard pass, on target if it had wings. Brandon Marshall made made him look a lot better. Orton is safe but obviously Coach doesn’t play it safe.
With that being said. Quinn and Tebow have big upsides. Quinn played for a struggling organization but has good quality skills. He just needs to be taught how to be a NFL quarterback by a good QB teacher. Tebow just plain wants to win.
I have no idea how Josh McDaniel is going to put this together but atleast he is playing towards his strengths.
Orton starts the season. Quinn is starting by week 8. I am very interested to see what comes out of Tim Tebow though. Does he prove the haters wrong?
All the writers comments that I have read about all the quarterbacks in Denver Brandstater’s name never comes up. I believe that because Brandstater is being paid the least amount of all the quaterbacks he is the odd man out.
Tim Tebow is the greatest college player of all time and he will prove to be an outstanding NFL Q.B. Just wait and see!! Go Gators!!!
If you look at exactly where Denver was drafting in relation to Tebow, you will see that part of Josh McDaniel’s thinking must surely have been to stop his former boss (now enemy) Bill Belichick of NE from drafting Tebow two picks down if the Cardinals didn’t.
BB was going to pick Tebow. No doubt. Who is behind Brady of note?
Think that wasn’t a major part?
Meyer and Belichick are also “GOOD” friends and NE went on to pick Gators Cunningham, Spikes (51-15 are good friends too) and Hernandez, all very good talent, for great value.
