If Favre retires, was signing worth it for Vikings?
Before their win over the Cowboys in the Divisional Round two weeks ago, I proposed the question of whether or not signing Brett Favre was worth it for the Vikings. Now that Minnesota has been knocked out of the playoffs and the annual Brett Favre retirement dance has begun, I’m proposing a similar question.
If Favre does decide to hang ‘em up this offseason, was signing him for one year worth it for the Vikings?
Had they lost to Dallas, I would have empathically said “no” to the above question. The Vikings won the division and reached the playoffs with Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson in 2008. So for all intents and purposes, had they lost to the Cowboys the Vikings would not have improved under Favre and therefore, his signing would have been a waste. After all, Minnesota didn’t jump over all the hurdles to sign Favre last offseason just so they could win another division title and be bounced in their first playoff game. And had he retired after a loss to Dallas, the signing would have looked even worse.
However, my stance has changed after the Vikes advanced to the NFC Championship Game because that meant they did improve with Favre under center. They weren’t knocking on the door of a Super Bowl last year with Jackson at quarterback and although we’ll never know, I highly doubt they would have reached the NFC title game with Jackson or Sage Rosenfels this season.
So yeah, the signing of Favre was worth it in my eyes. Did they sign him in hopes that he would advance them to the Super Bowl? Of course they did, but 30 teams fail to reach the Super Bowl every year and 28 of them didn’t get as far as the Vikings did this season. They knew they were a quarterback away from making a legitimate run and they did what they had to do in order to sign one of the best in the game.
But all this being said, one could still make the argument that because the Vikings failed to reach the Super Bowl, the signing of Favre was a waste. Keep in mind what he put them through last offseason in terms of making the decision about whether or not to return. Poor Jackson and Rosenfels had to field questions on a daily basis about Brett, all the while trying to compete for a job that may or may not have been available when the season started. Brad Childress essentially had to alienate the quarterbacks that were already on his roster in order to appease a veteran quarterback that he may or may not have the opportunity to coach. Then when Favre did sign, the Vikings still had to worry about what kind of an effect he would have on team chemistry and in the locker room.
In the end, the Vikings didn’t accomplish their goal of making it to the Super Bowl. If Favre retires, was everything they went through in the offseason worth it? Before you answer, keep in mind that if Favre doesn’t return the Vikings now have two quarterbacks in Jackson and Rosenfels who haven’t played in a year. And one of them (Jackson) is a restricted free agent.
If Brett does decide to come back for another season, then at least the Vikings had two cracks at trying to win a Super Bowl with the same roster. But if he doesn’t, then was all of this worth it for them to lose to the Saints in the NFC Championship Game?

Yes, they did improve but they didn’t sign Favre to get them close, they signed him to get them to the dance. If he does retire, the Vikings are basically back at square 1 in figuring out their QB situation. They’re easily the best team in that division with Favre behind center and they know it will be a lot easier to get to the superbowl with a home game and possibly a bye week, than as a wildcard.
Personally, I think they will make it worth his while to come back and take one more shot with that RB, improved receivers, and a very good defense. They know if he walks away, their window of opportunity with a very good team just got a lot smaller if they need to groom another QB. In a way they painted themselves into a corner with this move.
I guess it depends on how you look at the word “waste.” Some say that just having a shot makes the signing worthwhile, but others will say that since the Vikings failed (epically), then it was a waste. They did what they had to do to give the team the best chance to make the SB, but they failed.
My guess is that he’ll be back. He played well this season (though boneheaded Brett made a couple of appearances in Sunday’s game) and if he can figure out a way to skip all offseason duties, he’ll come back for another try. It’s not like the Vikings have Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings. They’ll probably welcome him back with open arms because they have no other good options.
The best thing that the Vikings can do is separate themselves from the Brett Favre saga. Move forward and build your young talent that you have. Rolling the dice with Favre another year could be detrimental to all stunting the growth of your team. Vikings were on the rise before Brett came and would have been with him gone.
Favre, although a great player, has a very egotistical view when it comes to the game. You can appreciate his heart, but the game is bigger than Brett and the honorable thing for him to do is step down and give Tavarius, Sage or whomever young QB that’s behind him a shot. Who knows if he’ll be able to sustain the hits he took last night next year.
Although, Brett defied the odds this year, I feel that if he does come back next year he will not have the same success and would hurt Minnesota.
I watched football religiously for the first time in 25 years because of Brett Fauvre and the Vikings. I went to college in Minnesota and taught there for 6 years. I don’t know a Minnesotan personally that doesn’t want him back. It was a fun year and Brett had a great year. They lost for a lot of reasons, not any one, that can be blamed on any one individual. Thanks for the memories Brett, I do hope like most Minnesotans you’ll be back. It seems to me the team grew greatly and were truly a team under his leadership. My greatest hope is Jackson can grow and learn under his example.
Welcome to Favre waffle time in Minnisota , it’t jack the Viking’s around this year . If he does come back every other QB on the team can sit and waste another year of no playing time and cause for more discontent on the team . Will he have outstanding , I don’t think so . Good luck Vikings .
I think that Favre brought a lot to the team in terms of inspiration and leadership. I am sure that he increased the fan base. I loved watching him and hope that he does not blame himself for the loss. I really hope to see him back next season for another run at it. It takes more than 4 or 5 months for everyone to get on the same page.
Getting Brett this year was definitely worth it. Beating the Pack twice and winning the Division would NOT have happened without Brett–with or without Rosenfels. TJ appeared to
Yes it worth it did you see Tavaris Jackson Play??? Best team since 98, problem with the vikings is they SHOULD have stayed in the AFL and not taken the NFL bribe, had they have done that we would be talking about ONE of the greatest franchise’s in NFL/AFL history, Instead we have as “NFL networks top 10 most snake bitten franchise’s” # 2 all time. It’s the curse equal to Babe Ruth, It’s not possible for anyone to change the fortunes of the Viqueens. Sorry we did it to brett, not even Joe friken Montana could get this team over the hump.. Beer is proof the god watches the Vikings and he too needs something to get that taste out his mouth..
Listen, sorry about that pass, but I am retiring. Probably. Ok, maybe not. I will let you know, getback to you guys on that. I promise to make a decision soon. Yeah, I will probably stick around. Maybe. I can’t gurantee it, but I have to talk to Deanna. I am not entirely sure, but I MAY not be back, but its always a possibility. Yeah, I guess I will come back, if I don’t retire. I will keep you filled in. I think I am going to take a break from football. Unless I decide to keep playing.
What did beating the Pack twice and winning the division get you? The Vikings are watching the Super Bowl from their couches just like the Packers. The Packers are set for the long term with a great young QB who’s lit it up his first 2 years. The Vikings have no future at QB aside from the whims of a man who will be turning 41 years old. The QB position is by far the hardest one to fill.
Without Favre the Packers instantly become the class of the division…..and probably are even if he does come back. The Packers offense is already red hot and their secondary play will only improve over the offseason. Favre has nowhere to go but down. It’s unrealistic to expect he’ll have another year like this one. The stars aligned for the Vikings this year, but they didn’t get it done. This was Favre’s last and best shot and it didn’t happen.
Either way the Vikings need to draft and groom a QB. Safe to say Sage and Tjack aren’t going to be top QB’s in the NFL.
I’m a Steelers fan by the way….lest somebody accuse me of bias being a Packers fan or something.
Apparently Vikings fans are satisfied with almost getting there. Set your sights low and you won’t be disappointed, I guess.
Brett was worth it until his refused to come out when his coach wanted to make a change. If he thinks he knows more than his coach I think his coach do not want him back. I also think his family will put a stop to his wanting to come back after the beating he took and what does he want to prove. He would be a good back-up for a contender next year if his family allows him. My personal openion is retire for good and see if he can catch on as a coach somewhere since he thinks he knows more than his coach.
I have been a viking fan since I was a little kid In 1969 Carl Eller picked me up and shook me over his head in Mankato where my grandmother lived. I am struggling today after this devastating loss. None compare to this one 4 superbowls, 1998 vs Atlanta. I have cheered against Brett for his whole career I’m a viking. This year was special because of him. All the negative bull—- that I’ve listened to today. The fumbles and his interception they were still in the game. N/O’s took so many cheapshots and disgraced the game and the officials followed. I thank the Vikes and Brett for the excitement, memories, and i wish Brett all the happiness in the world, beause all the haters out there in the closet should look at the TV ratings and ask themselves WHY BRETT FAVRE 4 EVER
Jesse…Brett Favre is STILL better than 90% of the quarterbacks in the league, but you think he’ll make a good backup on a contender? He just took a contender to the conference championship game as a starter! Your comment makes absolutely no sense.
Some fans crack me up…we kill guys for leaving too soon if they still have something left in the tank, but if Favre wants to play, it’s wrong because he’s too old, even if he’s still playing at a high level.
Favre gave the Vikings more than any quarterback has given to them in years> He believed in his guys and we were very lucky he came. The team was more confident and just played hard every game. I hope he comes back…Vikings need him to help them win! Thanks for a great season, Favre. Thanks for giving us a season to cheer about!
Its not Farves fault: The saints were picked to win the big game well before the season started! I use to be a die-hard NFL football junkie but its so oviouse that even the NFL is rigged and being run by the same people who determine the outcome of the rest of the sports being played on a daily basis!! Get use to it people the refs are making just as much money as those pros are making yearly–you all just cant and do not want to believe it!!! ITS ALL FIXED!!!!ESPECIALLY IN THE NFL
ingert B. Farve loves the game how can you not agree with that. He blew it with an ill advised throw last night that is a shame. He has done that stupid stuff more than once. But how can you miss the great throws he made during the year. It’s hard to measure but the great plays have to out weigh the bad ones.He picks a bad time to throw up the junk ball I can think of 3 playoff games that he has lost it on a stupid throw. I’ve recently became a Farve Fan mostly because you can still see that he has fun out there. The Vikings are the Vikings they may get the trophy one day It is just not that easy to get to the Super Bowl let alone win it.Good luck Favre in whatever you decide to do after this year. coiuat
The NFL is not rigged. It was reported this week that a Favre-Manning SB would’ve drawn an estimated 4 million extra viewers. It would’ve been a much bigger ticket than Brees/Manning. The NFL knows this as well. Common sense dictates that if the NFL wanted anybody to win in that game….it was Favre and the Vikings. Brees and the Saints were the sentimental favorite during the 2005 season……not the 2009 season.
And stop with the whining about the refs. The Saints were called for more penalties than the Vikings were. Remember when the Vikings called a timeout on that last drive and then the team out 12 men on the field? Those “biased” refs could’ve flagged Favre for 15 yards because he tried calling another timeout when he realized he had 12 men on. It is a 15 yard penalty to try and call back to back timeouts. They didn’t call it.
There was no conspiracy.
I have been a Brett Favre fan since he signed with the Packers. I have stuck by him through the good and the bad and I honestly believe he will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks to play the game. He took the Packers to the Super Bowl and won and I believe he can do the same with the Vikings. His signing with the Vikings helped to increase their fan base and brought excitement back to the sport. He enjoys playing and took all the criticism about his on again off again retirement in stride. It takes a real pro to be able to laugh at himself. I agree he made a mistake in the Saint’s game by not running his last play allowing Longwell a chance to win the game. He must have forgotten his last play in his last game as Green Bay’s quarterback, but that is something he will have to live with and hopefully move forward next year with the Vikings. It took him more than 1 year with the Packer’s to win the Super Bowl and I believe next year will be his Shining Moment. Don’t forget he took his team further than all but 3 teams his first year as their quarterback. Experts have said he is in the best shape ever and is playing better than quarterbacks half his age. The Vikings should have won the championship and would have if the referees had accurately called the plays. The Saint’s would have had 1 less TD and the Viking’s would have gotten the ball back in OT after Brees threw the 3rd down incompletion way over the head of his receiver which was not pass interference as it was inaccurately called by the referees. One more thing. If the Viking defense had hit Brees as hard and as many times after releasing the ball as the Saints hit Favre they would have been penalized for roughing the passer! I lost alot of respect for New Orleans and their Saint’s.
dont blame farve there were alot of cheap shots taken at him that were not addressed so blame the officials i think he did one hell of a job.personally im a steeler fan but farve is the sh=t
Brett, you were awesome – class act! Against the Bears, we make the extra point we’re home for the playoffs. The refs don’t blow the TD in Pittsburg with a tripping call that NO ONE could see, the Vikes are home for the playoffs. Lots of whatifs. The bottom line is, Brett and all of us Vike fans who sat on the fozen tundra of Metropolitan Stadium would loved to have that last toss back. So you tried to hard at the end cause you wanted it so bad just like all us Norskis did. Brett you need to return – for old time sake! The New Orleans game was one to build on not end on. YOU VIKES played a tremendous game. Brett and Pat return next year and there is no doubt who will be holding the Lombardi Trophy.
favre was not the whole team, frerotte could have done the same with less money, he did nothing with G/B, he should have not have gone back after he hurt is foot, and at his age in the end he was huffing and buffing, you saw it on T/V, the backup comes in we go to the S/B. He is good, Frerotte is better.
Brett blew it for us. We gave him everything including a ride on Ziggy’s private jet!
I like how everone can blam vikes or favre it looks like all that are writing on this there team is also sitting in front of the tv to. hats of to the vikes great year oh by the way 2nd div champs in a row .and there are 29 other teams that are not in the super bowl.
Favre threw an INT with :07 seconds left and they were in FG range. I think that is well within the definition of “blowing it”
Who in America does not love watching Farve play. If you know anything about football it is hard to root against a guy that gives it his all. I hope he comes back. He threw 37 td’s this year to 9 picks at age 40. The last pick he threw was on 3rd and 15 and if the pass was incomplete the kicker had a 55 yard field goal try. his career long was 52. This was hardly a makeable kick. The mistakes were made with perterson and harvin’s fumbles. and the play calling after the rice catch. they ran it into the line twice for no yards and couldn’t figure out a play after the time out that lead to a penalty. 96 broncos lost to jacksonville in the playoffs before they won 2 in a row. One fan hear that loves to watch the old guy play. Hope he’s back!
Tony, You think Gus Frerotte would have had the same results as Favre, what are you smoking?
What everyone is failing to remember is that the Vikings had nothing, as far as QBs, when the season began. The Vikings did not draft a legitimate QB so they went out and got one. One more year of experience for TJ wouldn’t matter, he is still a crappy QB. The only person that gained from the signing of Favre, besides the fans, was Childress who extended his contract. Favre is by far the best option MN had and they could only be lucky enough to have him back next year. If there are MN fans out there, remember what TJ did for the Vikes and what he failed to do. TJ couldn’t have made the plays Favre has made this season and while AP was struggling, Favre was able to get the Vikes though.
Did you read what I wrote, I said nothing about Frerotte, he sucks?
I would like to make a comment. Brett- Please do not retire. The game needs guys like you. I say this, and I am not even really a Vikings fan. But- I am a Brett Farve fan.. Yes I was disapointed about the game. I am sure you are too. But, there will be more attempts.. You have one of the best teams in the NFC. You have an outstanding offensive line, a good running back, and an excellent defense. Dont worry.. you will be back I am sure. No one has the ability that you do, at your age. Dont listen to the whiners and the speculators..You love football. Do what is best for you.. and your family.. forget about the media.
Anyone who watches the Vikings knows that Farve helped develop Sidney Rice and Percey Harvin. Even if Farve leaves… the team is better because of the year he spent in Minnesota.
Right now, almost 80% of the people who voted in the poll say “yes” it was worth it. I agree 100%. They were a field goal away from winning at the end, despite other players turning over the ball in critical situations (especially that red zone fumble). Brett Favre is everything people wanted and hoped for. And, I’ll bet you every 40 year old guy in the country was rooting for him. Brett made it a storybook season that we’ll talk about for years to come. .
Will you remember who won the 2010 Superbowl twenty years from now? I doubt it. But you’ll always remember Brett Favre, and how he came a score away from being a legend. He was definitely worth it!!
If Brett Favre makes that final score to win the game, they would have made a movie about the last few seasons. No doubt about it…
Ridiculous question to ponder…
Team gains and revenue gains with him there.
This was no more than a drug fix…once the “high” is gone, your back to square one the next day. Dazed and confused, but got big dollars and close to the dance. Now what…cry baby gonna “retire” again?
Iam a die hard FAVRE fan,I am also from GEORGIA and ATLANTA made the biggest mistake of there life when they let BRETT go.he was awesome in GREENBAY i HAD NEVER CARED for foot ball until my son encouraged me to watch BRETT play have been a favre fan ever since that day. would love to see him keep playing but i also do not want to see him get seriously injured whatever he decides he is the greatest in my eyes THANK YOU BRETT
There’s only one guy that can waffle about retiring like this, and that’s Brett Farve!
Now if you excuse me, I have to put his poster back on my bedroom ceiling!
Best….
JM
Of course it was worth it. If you have followed the Vikings on a day-to-day basis this year you would see that the team lifted as a whole on nearly every level. Go to the Pioneer Press today and read the story on the Vikings players wanting Favre back. The guy threw an int w 19 secs left on a potential game winning drive, they end up losing the game and to a man they feel bad about not doing enough to get ‘him’ to the Super Bowl !!! He’s a true leader of men and has the respect of that lockerroom like no one else could. If he doesn’t come back he still will have left the example of how a leader conducts himself on a daily basis on many young stars. Players/coaches measure themselves each year based on winning championships, fans are here every year for lifetimes and we know that isn’t realistic. It would be amazing to get a Super Bowl as a Viking fan but year-to-year its the journey of each season. 2009 will go down has my favorite year as a Viking fan in the post Tarkenton era.
Jackson and Rosenfels are capable backups, nothing more. If the vikes are smart, they draft or trade Jackson for a young’un with starting potential and have Farve do the player/coach thing with him for a year. Get the kid some reps and groom him as a starter for the 2011 season.
BRING HIM TO THE EAGLES AND SEND 5 TO VIKES
This was a poor signing overall because Brett “For Hire” Favre has done nothing but cripple the future of the QB position for this team whether he walks away or not. It has nothing to do with whether or not Jackson or Rosenfels could have gotten them this far…But moreso that if he retires they’ll have a hard time getting back for years to come unless they develop Jackson or are able to obtain a better QB option. At the end of the day Favre came up short of his goal which was to win the SB while at the same time stifling the development of a young QB.
Brett brought a confidence and swagger back to this team that has been missing since the Bud Grant days. If Childress did one thing correct in his time in Minn, it was to bring in Brett. I hope he stays for 1 more. If you look in the dictionary, next to the word Man is a pciture of Brett!
Brett exceeded expectations and bucked (for the most part) his 7 year trend of declining play in the months of December and January. However:
*Vikings were 10-6 the previous year on a far more difficult schedule. This year you had the 3rd easiest schedule in the NFL.
*Vikings roster was appreciably better this year compared to 08′. Rice was due to arrive with or without Favre and he bailed Favre out of at least a dozen INT’s from poorly thrown balls (no, they were’nt back-shoulder, they were bad passes.
*From my perspective he was signed for that last series in regulation. That’s why you bring in a HOF QB. That’s where he transcends everybody elses play. What did you get? Two rookie mistakes:
1) A 19 year veteran QB breaks the huddle with 12 men. Don’t blame Childress or anybody else. Veteran QB’s know you step out of the huddle when sub-packages come in to avoid just such silly penalties. Fail.
2) Ryan Longwell is 8 of 8 on field goals of 50 yds or better since 2008. Brett could have walked 5 yds on that INT play in regulation making it 50 yds or less to win the game. Instead he throws into a sea of black for the pick. Fail.
Sorry, I agree the expectation was to get to the NFC championship game and the team did so. However, on the biggest stage, the biggest moment on the biggest drive he completely collapsed. That was horrible.
As a Vikes fan married to a Packer fan for 28 years, I have followed Brett on both sides of the stands. No matter who rode the tide that year for MN/GB we were both fans of Favre. I was thrilled to death to see him sign with MN, so this whole season has been a gift no matter the outcome. MN fans are made of hardy stock, and when our year finally arrives, it will be well worth the wait.
I too lost a lot of respect for the Saints after this week’s game – not just dirty rice down there, it seems. I saw no reason for the constant beatdown on our Favre.
Favre’s skills and leadership as well as his pure joy of the game were always worth the whole investment. I only can pray he will hang in there one more year, even just for mentorship. Favre fans are not ready to have him retire yet. Thanks, Brett and Deanna and family for at least letting us share this year with you, – Brett will be 4-ever in our hearts no matter what.
They mortgaged their future for a 1 year or 2 year shot at winning the Super Bowl. I’d say it wasn’t worth it. The team won the division last year with T-Jack, and could probably have done it again.
It was a good move to have Favre the veteran for a year. Everytime Favre came to the sidelines Rosenfels was talking to him or around him. Favre could of helped Rosenfels for next season in much the same way Collins helped Young
It was definitely worth it ’til Sunday but then they’re a minute away from the Super Bowl and he throws the DUMBEST pass I’ve seen in 50 yrs. of watching pro football. I say “stick a fork in him”-he’s done.
If you remember it was the Viks that came to Brett not the other way around. We tried to get him out of retirement. And all out it was a great season. Should we be in th SB yes but a lot of key fumbling kept us from getting to the dance, thats right fumbling not Favre kept us from the dance. The coaches on the final drive should have never called a pass play, they should have never told Favre that they were out of field goal range. It was poor coaching and fumbles that lost us the game. Favre had arguable the best season of him career. Yes the late hits were not called and the Saints were out to hurt Favre from the beginning and the O.T. penalties were bull S**T but when it comes down to it the Viks still had a shot to win and poor coaching lost it in the end. A stupid penalty after a T.O. and a stupid play call on 3rd and 15 not Favre, lost the game for them. Favre showed how much he loves the game and how much he wanted to win that game. He should be honored not critisized. Had they won that game ever one would be talking about how great he is not critisizing him… Thanks Brett for the great memories it was wonderful to see you in the white and purple. And what ever your decison we know it will be right for you who care what any one else thinks…
T-bone was partially wrong Minn was the best team in there division…this year. I see Greenbay the better next season. Alot of people forgot Greenbay changed it’s defense and everyone was saying it’s going to take 2 to 3 years to get it right. I think they will have it straitened by next traiing camp. I was concerned if they were going to play our Saints in the playoffs. Minn went for the quick win w/Brett. Nice try Minn you can get Brett’s richard out of your mouths now. Brett won’t help you next year
I think it is really sad that Saints fans are happy with how they played. They played dirtier than any team I have ever seen, I feel that they have disrespected the game of football with the cheat shot on Favre. And lets face it the Viks showed they were still a great team 5 turnovers and they still could have won. If the Saints were half the team they are supposed to be the should have ran away with that game. Oh by the way Saints fans good luck in the S.B. Manning is going to eat you alive…
GEORGE……….. WILL HE HAVE OUTSTANDING?? my god, you put the time into posting on here, and you write that crap ???
You never know when you’ll need a quarterback who can throw a touchdown when up by 24 with less than two minutes in a game yet can throw it to the other team the next week to send a game into overtime. Worth it? Depends on if you want that win on SB Sunday. Not with crybaby Brett.
Bret got this team to go farther than anyone else could have. When he took over calling plays in the 2nd half of the bears game is when the offense took off, and the the rest of the team along with it. you can’t beat any team when you have 5 turnovers, the vikings beat themselves.
I’m happy Saints won even playing crappy. It tells you even when they don’t play up to there potential they still can win. Shows Minn isn’t all that great as they say they are. That a way to blow your money on players that didn’t come thru.
It really shows how much better the vikes are than the saints, take away the stupid turnovers and vikes kill the saints, but not going to cry, good luck to the saints in the superbowl.
Brett should come back to the Vikings. The ol’ gunslinger has a lot more interceptions left in him.
It’s wins and losses. One game doesn’t prove anything. I’m sure if Minn was playing like they did against Ariz, Cinn, or Car it would have been a different pic. There are days when a team does not play as good. No one remembers the losers in championship games, you got that going for you. Maybe not next year also. TEHE. These are for the comments from Minn all year stating they will be the greatest this year and next. You should have listened to Fran T. He didn’t agree with getting Brett.
It really shows how much better the vikes are than the saints, take away the stupid turnovers and vikes kill the saints
Kind of like saying take away the losses, and the Raiders are in the playoffs.
No worse than the Bears mortgaging the future for Cutler. No one can blame Favre for going to a more complete team with a chance at the SB. Guess we’ll find out in late August if he’s coming back.
Please – Steve, could have would have. I don’t yet see that category in NFL Hall of Fame or most stat logs. Brett, Peterson and Minn lost. Remember LOST. It’s the score at the end of the game. No matter how many yards you ran or passed or in this case turnovers, snicker. Hey what ever happened too Peterson anyways? Noone isn’t talking about him. Him and Brett are up for Fedx player of the year. HAHAHAHAHAH yaeh right. Turn over players of the year
Without Favre, the Vikes wouldn’t have received a sniff from the media even if they did go as far. This is an entertainment business, so if I was part of the Viking brass, you’d better believe it was worth it. Its a shame, Im not a Favre fan, but I’ll get to listen to his 10,000 sound bites over the off season while he “figures out” what he wants to do.
Soon we’ll hear from all the Favre BASHERS like the disfunctional sport writers on how he should retire. Brett is a living legend. He holds all the important records and is the greatest living player today. He’s a winner and will be back. Don’t blame him for the loss. The job of the defense is to hold the offense to 3 and out. They should have stopped NO’s from getting into field goal position. It takes 22 players to play the game to win. DOn’t pin it on to just quarterback.
If the Vikings wanted to plug in an old-timer at QB they would have been better off with Brad Johnson, a game manager who is less mistake prone, has a Super Bowl ring, and played a long time in Minnesota. With all the talent at RB and WR, all you need is a QB who won’t lose the game.
I love Brett Farve, To me he is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game! Much respect to him and I hope if he does decide to come back he decides to play somewhere else. Some where that the fans appreciate him. Some where that the fans arent whinners and such sore losers. In his post game press confrence the reporters tried to get him to talk trash about the Saints, and how the refs missed calls or made bad calls …but he didnt. He even stated if he wasnt representing the NFC in The SuperBowl he wanted the Saints be the team that does! He’s a MAN, not a whinny sniveling sore loser which all the vickings fans seem to be!
I loved this season with Brett as a Minnesota Viking! Born in MN and a Viking fan, I grew up watching football with my dad. When the Vikings weren’t playing I always enjoyed watching Favre play.
I’m sick and tired of all these armchair judges saying they’re “Sick of the Brett Favre retirement dance.” I’d like to ask them, “How much did it really effect your life?” “Does it really cause you that much anger or anxiety?” I’d like to say to them, “So what? It the GAME of football. He’s not an elected politician, he isn’t your family doctor going in and out of retirement. So f’ing what if he’s in then out. If it really bothers you so much….get a life of your own!”
Brett Favre was a huge part in making this season one to remember for Viking fans. You are overlooking the fact the Vikings are in need of a new stadium and the buzz has returned in that respect due to the great season they just had. As for his signing being a waste, you have to be kidding!! Only one team can win a Super Bowl every year. If you believe it’s a waste to sign players to try and get you to a Championship and you fail the whole league is a waste. Get serious please!! When the Saints get clobbered by the Colts in the Super Bowl they wasted their time and money signing Darren Sharper in the off-season to improve their chances at winning it all? Tell that to their true fans and see where that gets you. The day they quit trying to do everything they can to improve their chances at a Super Bowl Title is the day fans should walk away from the sport!!
RFS says:
They mortgaged their future for a 1 year or 2 year shot at winning the Super Bowl. I’d say it wasn’t worth it. The team won the division last year with T-Jack, and could probably have done it again.
January 26th, 2010 at 10:50 am
What idiot wrote this? Mortgaged their future? It cost them nothing in the future to sign Favre, the only cost was out of Ziggy’s bottomless pockets. get your facts right before you say something stupid like that!!
Well said Doug! Brett is a great quarterback and gave us a great season! Hopefully he comes back and we will have another shot at the big one.
Totally worth it. The Vikings gained new fans (and new fan’s money) because of Brett Favre. Even if Brett retires they will keep many of those fans because the rest of the Vikings team won us over during the course of the season.
I love what Brett brings to the game and hope he hangs in there for another year. Can’t say he didn’t make a HUGE error in judgment with that misguided throw, but who knows what precipated it? Like some of the other contributors, I lost ALL respect for the Saints..a bunch of dirty scumbags, taking those hits on Brett just for kicks..hope they lose, which they will. Go for it Peyton.
I say the vikings did the right thing when the signed him and if he wants to play next year you let him. The experience and leadership he brought to the vikings this year was priceless. Another year of those qualities rubbuing off on younger players is a great asset for any organization.
Speaking for a guy with my last name (but a bit more famous),I think the Brett needs to get a cane and sit in a rocking chair after the beating he took against the Saints. The sign is on the wall Brett, if you come back next year every team, (especially the Packers) will come at you like the Saints did and bust you up, mark my words! It ain’t worth another long painful season Brett, so get out now big guy as you got nothing more to prove, look me up (in Atlanta) and become the QB coach for the Falcons!
It’s worth it if Favre leads to renewed interest in Vikings which leads to new stadium!!
Jenny I see you and a lot of Minn fans have Brett’s richard still in there mouth. Let it go. He’ll be one year older next season and at that age range it’s dog years. You complain about how the saints played dirty. People should get out of the kitchen if they can’t handle the heat. Minn plays the same way and got away with calls just like everyone else.
please quit looking for excuses for your team that still lost to a team that didn’t play there best.
Being a Vikes fan my whole life, I have grown to hate the Green Bay Packers and just about everybody to put on a jersey. I used to love when Favre would make the bone head play but would hate him even more for throwing multiple TD passes against us. Yes the Vikings won the NFC North with T-Jack at the helm in ’08 but the Packers are better the more Rodgers gets to prove himself so I dont see us winning the division this year if T-Jack was the QB. Favre gave us the best chance to win. And he did that. I want him back again next year. Vikes fans would be dumb not to. If he retires, that is totally his call and if he wants to wait ’till after training camp to say so then go rigt ahead!
As a Packer fan this is going to hurt a bit but what the hay. Brett chose the Vikings because they were a good team with maybe the best chance to get to the SB (ow ow ow, daammm that stings!). Ok so he threw a pick at the end, get used to it, we did. You hold your breath on every down. He sometimes makes mistakes and I’ve cursed him more that once for doing something dumb but his fans never gave up on him because he won a lot more than he lost and he never gives up, NEVER. The guy is tough as nails and he’s got the most consecutive starts for a quarterback record to prove it (along with a long azz list of other records). And so what if he flip flops on retirement, it makes for good off season entertainment. And by the way, Brett did not lose the game. That blame needs to get spread around a bit. I forget, somebody help me out here, was it 4 or 5 lost fumbles and 2 or 3 more fumbles that the Vikings were lucky to recover???? Probly should check the stats. I guarantee if Brett decides to come back it will be another fun season for the Vikings and their fans. Love ya Brett, hang in there.
Gwaynek comments how it doesn’t affect us. Well boob it won’t directly affect most of us, but it does affect the team trying to prepare for next season, for the mentality of the other quarterbacks waiting to begin there career, for the qb timing of throws to there receivers. The center getting use to timing of snaps and handoffs. The rest of the teams timing. But there is brett sitting on his tractor knowing he has the nfl in his hands and the people who feel sorry for brett and saying its ok take your time. Taking his sweeta– time deciding if he should come to work anymore. Would you allow any other player to do this? I wouldn’t he’s just spoiled. Brett I hope you read some of these comments. Grow up dude! What comes around goes around.
Retire already, you stupid honky! If I gave as poor a performance as US President as Favre does at winning the big one….well….oh wait….
barrack obama says:…
LOL – Classic
It was a great year. I think the vast majority saying otherwise just don’t like the Vikings.
Of course it was worth it. Viking Fans had a blast this year.
Was Favre worth it? The answer is a resounding ’duh’! C’mon, T-Jack or Sage? Not even close. If nothing else, his presence at least gave both second-stringers a chance to learn how to manage a game like a hall-of-famer. In a game that the Vikes could have/should have won, he came up a 12th man short of going to the Big Game. He took vicious hit after vicious hit and hung in there like few QB’s could have. Say what you will about his dramatics before signing, but he was worth it, without a second thought. Go ahead and bash him all you want, but he lead the Vikes to within seconds of the Super Bowl. Do you hate Favre because of his antics, or because he better than most other QB’s at the age of 40?!
Fran T’s comment needs to be kept to himself. He was a great scrambler but the VIkes got their butts kicked in every Super Bowl he took them to toatally embarassed. So Fran T you get to keep your comments to yourself.
I loved to see Brett screw it up for the vikings at the end of the game. I have been a packer fan for about 5 years now and the Bret I know throws a lot of interceptions and breaks at the most important part of the game sometimes. He can also do the opposite by throwing wild and wonderful passes at just the right time to win the game. This season has been a tough one for Packers to see Brett with the Vikings. There is something very awesome about how this game ended. I feel sorry for Brett…well sort of…not really.
HE WAS DAMNED WORTH IT!!!! I’M DIE HARD VIKINGS FAN HAVE BEEN FOR 20 YEARS AND ALWAYS HATED FAVRE…
STILL NOT MY FAVORITE PLAYER , BUT, WHAT HE BROUGHT TO THIS TEAM , TO THE FANS TO THE STATE …PHENOMINAL!!!! 40 YEARS OLD AND STILL KICKING IT WITH PLAYERS 15 YEARS YOUNGER THAN HIM, OUT THROWING QUARTERBACKS 10 YEARS YOUNGER THAN HIM….
YOU KEEP THIS SAME TEAM, WILLIAMS WE DON’T WANT YOU TO RETIRE ..DO ONE MORE YEAR….BRETT SHOW UP TO TRAINING CAMP…CONTINUE TO GET ONE WITH YOUR BOYS, GIVE IT A YEAR ….TRAIN JACKSON AND ROSENFELS …IT’S ALL WIN WIN……..REMEMBER BRETT DID THIS WITHOUT REAL KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR PLAYERS, DIDN’T REALLYS HOW UP TO TRAINING CAMP …
AND YOU STILL WAS OUTSTANDING!!!!
Yes, he was worth it. The only reason the drama continues, “Will he or won’t he retire?” is because of you–the media. Leave the guy alone. It was a great season with an emotional ending–he’s human like the rest of his team–and after a devestating loss–grieving is a normal part of healing. Quit the “Favre Watch” and go back to nosing into the drama of the upcoming Superbowl, basketball and upcoming baseball season. You have plenty of work to do without becoming “The National Enquirer”. Besides, the media doesn’t care what we, the true fans, have to say anyway. No matter what anyone else says: HE didn’t cost us the game. They lost the game as a team. After all, there’s no “I” in team. Enough of creating drama where there isn’t any!!!
He will retire “FINALLY”.. Because he know’s the schedule will be alot harder next year, unlike the cake walk schedule he knew he was coming to this year.. I LOVED how his year ended…
Ya know, I watched the game and really didn’t expect alot. I was very impressed to see the Saints come out on top of the Vikings. I feel it was more than worth it for the vikings, Brett has made his make in the NFL that will not be forgotten soon. At 40 and playing the game he played with kids 10 years or more his junior, there are not many around that can nor would do that! I love to watch the man and I hope he is around next season to groom Jackson and Rosenfels this is truly a man to mentor. I was happy for the Saints and at the same time felt bad for Brett!
Was it worth it, that’s a stupid question. They made it to the NFC Championship game and without him they wouldn’t have. The down side is they didn’t make it to and win the superbowl and as everyone knows it’s so so hard to repeat. The down side is the Vikings are in a lurch if they don’t get a very good QB to replace Favre if he doesn’t come back because the Vikings are a very good football team.
Part of me wishes they would have won the entire thing as I’m sick and tired of the Prima Donna that is Favre. He’s a major choke artist in big games and why he gets all the hype is beyond me….without Desmond Howards 2 TD’s and Reggie White this guy doesn’t have a ring…truly don’t know why everyone in the media likes this guy….a real puzzle!
Brett was worth every penny and then some, the impact he made with the players and his play on the field for the Vikings will go down as one of the best seasons by any Vikings QB! I for one hopes Brett comes back for one more year! I recently read in the N.Y.Daily News their claim the people of Minnesota are blaming Brett for sundays loss! What a crock of sh**! I think the blame should not only be placed in Adrian Petersons fumbling(3)hands! But also the Chicago game that Brett guided the team back to tie and send into overtime. The was driving to win the game till #28 fumbled the ball, thus losing the game and a chance at the #1 seed in the playoffs! Your talking the NFC championship game to go to the super bowl and the running back fumbles the ball 3 times in a game your out playing the home team! That is un-acceptable! Brett was the one that kept bringing the Vikings back to tie and send to overtime! Anyone that blames Brett and not A.P. is a idiot in my view!
why don’t you people learn how to spell before you post any nonsense in here
If all the Vikings wanted was to make it to the NFC title game, so Favre could cement his legacy as the worst clutch QB in history then it was totally worth it. He must thank God every day that a freakin’ Kick Return specialist saved him from being Dan Marino II.
Green Bay took one year to recover from the loss of Favre. Jets took less than a year. Unfortunately for Minnesota, you don’t have a QB in hand or a high enough draft choice to bring one in. The Favre legacy in Minnesota will be determined by Green Bay owning the Division for the next 5+ years.
Oh yeah, the better team won the NFC Championship game. How bad can a team be that they nearly double the yardage but can’t get it done in the only stat that counts, the score? And that’s with overwhelming favoritism from the officials.
Also, no way the gunslinger makes it to the playoffs with the Vikings schedule next year. And he knows it. He was only worth an additional two wins this year, and that was with a cake schedule.
Vikes are a bunch of fags. Brett really went over here to play indoors. You guys are a bunch of wimps. Brett could’nt play anymore in NY and Greenbay because of the cold. Our last 10 games were played indoors or warmer climate locations except for one game in Chicago. The rest of the earlier schedule was in fall season only. Way to choke guys err girls. I told you it was a mistake. I like too see how the NFL is going to make the schedule out again. I’m going to laugh my a– off when the viqueens move to LA. Wouldn’t that be funny Minn?
Just loved watching the Bears beat Farve 1 more time this year….didn’t matter if he wore purple or yellow….just seeing him lose to the Bears made my season.
The Vikings won one more regular season game and one playoff game this year as opposed to last year. What a turn around. The only person who gained anything this was Favre, He beat the Packers twice and padded his career stats.
he should retire, just watch the expressions on his wifes face, she did not enjoy the game, give it up homey its time,we will allways love your style
everyone is talking about farve leave him alone he has done what few qbs have done.as far as the saints and colts im a steeler fan for life HOW MANY LOMBARDI TROPHYS DO YALL HAVE.
hell yes, we haven’t had good qb in a long time.
i hope he comes back.
no bret farve can suck my dick he is gay and will always be gay
Forget what Favre did on the field. He was a big plus in revenue; more ticket sales ,more TV time; more merchandise sales after all football is a business. Oh yeah if he does come back so will Williams.I hope he waits till his body recovers from the beating he took before he makes a decision. He’s still the Vikes best chance.
He was Worth EVERY PENNY! I am a Giants fan so I am not being biased. I watched some freaking awesome footbal when I watched the Vikes it was fun to watch. Gmen on the other hand not so much
Brett you did great durng the season. BUT that crossover pass against Saints? This is why I couldn’t let you QB this Packer team anymore. Now if your plans are to really (I mean really)retire this time I invite you back Lambeau maybe as a beer vendor? Heck, we always need a guy with a great arm to get thise beers in the hands of our fantastic fans that now cheer so hardily for my man Aaron Rodgers…you remember him don’t you?..yeah he’s a great kid and they love him here! I am not trying to hurt your feelings Brett, but he should take us to the Super Bowl many times and probably erase many of your records, except that doggone boneheaded record of “picks” that you should own for eternity. Well call me after you make your decision there with Chilly your main man as I am moe than willing to recapture our strong respect that we once held for each other. Say hello to Deanna for me also, she is such a honey of a gal..my wife misses those “power shopping” days with her when we were out hunting coon.Looking to hear form you Buddy! Alwaqys welcome back to Grand Green Bay!
Hey Brett you can forget about coming back Old Man as I will be in camp (yeah I go to camp)with the Vikings next summer. But this time I will take them ALL THE WAY and make sure I don’t throw any of those boneheaded “I will win it myself” passes for Chilly Boy. By the way, he already has called me and I am ready to sign on the dotted line. You have a good life on that tractor Brett and watch me in next year’s Super Bowl as QB of the Vikings. See ya man!
y’all can eat me! I’m kickin it down here. I got me here my guitar and my neighbor has his banjo. Hey maybe you Minn fans can canoe past us and we can party together down here. Vikes thanx for letting me sing with you in the locker room – ‘Pants on the ground’ Now I will sing – ‘Balls on the ground, balls on the ground, Vickings can’t win with their balls on the ground…’ hick-up!
I’m from Wisconsin. Have seen Favre all through his Green Bay years. Have seen the countless stupid egotistical interceptions he has thrown over and over and over. Could never understand how someone in the NFL that long could keep throwing those mindless interceptions all the time. Then saw him try to lead the Jets and he blew that. I’ve been predicting all year Favre will blow it for the Vikes and he did, on his last mindless pass when a thinking quarterback would run the 5 yards and let an accomplished kicker attempt the win. Favre is a jock, period. Pure jock mentality. I heard him always say “When I retire I’m gonna ride my tractor into the sunset” Thats the line of a jock addicted to media and fan attention who wants them to plead for him to stay. With Ron Wolf the Pack were in 2 super bowls because Reggie White made it cool for the African American athlete to play in Green Bay, and several good ones followed him. They did not win due to Favre. Favre will never retire knowing his last pass was another mindless interception that eliminated a second team from the super bowl. My current prediction: He’ll return and blow it again next year.
without farve the vikings woulds of not won tghere division.the packers would have n they would of not made the playoffs.period.1 more year for brett who proved not only can he play at a high level he played at an elite level.brett blew nothing.if perterson could hold on to the ball 2 fumbles or make a tranfer the proper way another fumnble then the game would of never went to ot.idiots say its brets fault.without him it is a 9-7 year at best.
The best thing for the Vikes is to cut their losses from Farve and look to get McNabb who probably will be either cut or traded from Phily! That may solve their QB problems!
OK, the statement that Favre is not worth it because they reached the same place last year is misleading. They reached the playoffs last year becasue the Packers were with a new QB, Rodgers who was still a “rookie” as a starter; with the Bears playing with Orton, who in my opinion is no better than his record this year. and the Lions also being a far worse team. Next year, I see those three teams being much better and possibly catching up fast with the Vikings. If we stick with T-Jack, and Rosey, without a vast improvement, we could easily be in third place in the NFC North. NOW, Favre was worth it for the intangibles, he brought our team closer and helped our QBs become smarter. Not to mention, he hopefully put a fire under the butts of the Stadium committee to get something done because looks what happens when we have a team that is winning. The stadium makes money, and if we could get a Superbowl in the Twin Cities, that would be awesome! I DEFINATELY beleive Favre was a boost to this team, both on and off the field. Stop comparing him to Ferrotte and T-Jack last year, that is ignorant and misinformed!!
All these idiots in here critiquing Favre for his cross body throw are morons and have never played an ahtletic competitive sport in their life! I didn’t like the throw either, but I am not going to say he new he was making a bad throw. In his mind he saw an open man and Porter came out of his blind spot to make the play. Credit the Saints for changing to zone and porter to know Favre will throw cross body, but that does not make favre a bad gamble. There are so many QBs that throw INTs and most of them are gambles and mis-throws. So what’s the difference. People love to hate Favre, but truth be told and numbers back it, he is one of the BEST in history!!! Terry Bradshaw was not a better QB. Brett made a mistake and because he is the cometitor he is, he put it on his back, which is, by the way, what MOST coaches want. A QB who wants the ball… I am proud of the Vikes and IMPRESSED by Favre’s year… all you haters, go back to eating your fatA$$es into the impression you have on your couch and wait til next year so you can criticise more athletes who do more in one day than you do in one year. If you’ve ever played a sport, it’s like being a cop, split second decisions made with everyone afterwards with all the time in the world to second guess your decision. Get a life and play don’t preach!
Hey Frank, did you see and predict how and when Rodgers would blow it for the Packers? I don’t seem to recall seeing them make it all the way this year? The fact is QBs, RBs, WRs, Defense, all make mistakes but because you cheesehead morons hate Favre you want and love to blame him. He brought you guys a friggin championship you ungrateful a-holes! There are so many teams that would love to have a Favre, or a McNabb, who by the way has made mistakes and had terrible games but remains in Philly, AND has never won a SB. Cheeseheads are all morons, except for the ones who understand the sport and love of the game and don’t care what uniform he wears but that he did for them what he could. What most cheeseheads don’t and will never understand is, Favre wanted out of GB because he could see the teams unwillingness to upgrade at certain positions to give him better targets and outlets. WHY do you think he came to the Vikings, becasue we had so many weapons for him to go to and his numbers vindicated him. I can’t stand the cheesehead nation and their ignorance. You ought to be GRATEFUL to Favre for giving you what only some teams wish they could have and what Rodgers probably won’t get you either. He’s a good QB but until he can beat the Favres, and Mannings, and Warners on a regular basis, he won’t go anywhere.
The signing of Brett Farve was brilliant for many reasons. The first being getting deeper in the playoffs. They should have won against the Saints b/c they are the better team. AP, Harvin and Berryman didn’t help by fumbling 6 times. But what no one is talking about is by bringing in Farve they were able to have their two young QB’s (especially Jackson) learn from a Hall of Famer. They can see his work ethic, how he dissects the game film and how he manages the flow of the game. If you ever watched Jackson play you can see just how erratic he is and Rosenfeld always tries to do too much. Jackson should benfit most from this experience. how often doe s aguy get to work with a Hall of Famer to learn how the game is supposed to be played?
You people are NUTS! Favre gave it the best run he possible could. He cant win the game on his own! If AP could hang on to the dam ball this could have easily gone the other way. Yes he threw the last interception, got the hell beat out of him and still came up firing with all he had. AP is overrated by far! If Brett wasnt there they would have NEVER made it even close. Call it for what it is.
It’s better to have loved and lossed than to have never loved at all.
Of course signing Favre was a good move, he played like an MVP. We have questions going forward but what team doesn’t?
It was great to have him, but remember why, not just a championship but also to sell the state on a new stadium, they needed to sell tickets. And the Wiffs do not care about the stadium as much to buy land around a new statdium to make them millions in development that is why they do not want one in downtown Minneapolis. The Vikings are only a pawn to the Wiffs fortune.
I think Favre was, great and courageous. I think the officaitig was the worse I have ever seen. What happened to the Brady Rule, going low at the Quarterbacks legs? Any fan of football knew what was going on when the officials let Favre get hit on handoffs. Why should Brett come back? Twelve men in the huddle after a time out, now that’s good coaching. The Aints had zero sacks.
Favre was the best option. If he wasn’t the QB, the Vikes have zero chance of making it anywhere in the post-season. It was a great ride this year with Favre; just got car-jacked by fumbles, poor officiating and horrible coaching. 12 men in the huddle? This isn’t Jr. High any more Chilly!
Frank, I’m from WI too. And good news, pack your stuff, you’ve just been traded.
I’m not a big Vikings or Green Bay fan (go Bears) but I think Favre was a good aquisition. They hired him to win the Super Bowl and didn’t but they did play well enough to be there. The only 2 stats that New Orleans won were turnover ratio and Score. Favre was at least indirectly responsible for 2 of the 5 Vikings turnovers but on the whole he did a great job during the season and through the playoffs. To the Viking Fan post above, the Vikings were never in the AFL. Don’t take that last comment wrong. It wasn’t trash talk just straightening out some bad info someone gave you.
Tim,
I have to so AGREE WITH YOU! the refs sucked! first the no call on #4 with the Brady rule, and you cannot tell me ever, that the so called CATCH that went to booth review wasnt bull!!!! they got screwed all the way around… That is and will be the absoulte REF job I have ever seen!
Hey guys, lalrivera, Barry, Cold in Minnie, NorseGods72 (gay tag name), and everyone else that is showing their love for me. Let me go, I gave you all little hardo– this past season. I had fun…so I screwed up in the end. It’s the last error in the game that really counts. I’m suppose to be going to the hall. I shouldn’t be making those mistakes. Maybe it was because they shot me up after that ankle injury on the sideline. I was felling pretty good after that shot. I guess I peaked out when I threw that interception. Big deal get over it. HAHAHA! Let go of my popsicle thats for my wife. You guys are freaking me out. You guys are two face. You use to hate me when I was in GB. Now you would go on your knees for me. EEWWW! (Thats gay). Vikes need to find a fresh new Qb instead of dumpster diving for a QB. Wait a minute….Honey where are my tractor keys? Thanks!…I’m back. Just let me go. It’s hard for me to let go of football, because I’m addicted to football, if not that I might go back to pills. Out
I totally think it was worth it to sign Favre. He gave them the best opportunity to get to the SuperBowl even though they didn’t make it. He brought out the best of every player on that team and showed them the potential they all have. He made pro bowlers out of many of them. His experience and knowledge of the game was now handed down to them and their quarterbacks. Doesn’t matter how the refs were or any missed calls the team had five turn overs and STILL almost won the game. No matter how long Brett plays on a teeam he will be an asset and worht every penny I just hope he comes back next year for another chance, he is always fun to watch!
Everyone talks about his interception in the last seconds but the Vikings should not have let it get to that. He played his heart out the whole game keeping up with the scoring just as he did that Monday night with the Cardinals. He busted his butt. If there hadn’t been fumbles and penalties they would have blown away the Saints. Nobody talks about the pass interference call in OT that cost the Vikings getting the ball. Yeah Brett threw and interception much like the championship game with the Giants in 2008, so Brett fans know these things can happen. I was most concerned the whole game with the offense holding onto the ball then I was worried about Brett throwing interceptions(it happens to every quarterback). How many missed opportunities did Minnesota have that the other team members blew for Brett yet he still got out there and played his heart out. I watched Brett in Green Bay, I followed him to the Jets(where he was hurt but still played his heart out), to Minnesota. Any NFL team would be lucky to have Brett for as long as he can play. He is an asset to any team he brings out the potential in every player he plays with.
The older we get , the more mistakes we make.
the Packers scout, acquire, coach, train and develop raw talent into star quarterback stuff by sticking to it. The Vikes chase the
FARVE CHOKED, HE LOST IT FOR THE VIKINGS. ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS RUN A COUPLE YARDS OR THROW IT AWAY!
VIKINGS OVERCAME EVERYTHING IN THAT GAME FOR THAT 1 PLAY and FARVE BEAT THE VIKINGS AGAIN! GO HOME!
You really need to have your head buried somewhere to think that the NFL and refs wouldn’t prefer to have the Vikings and Fav-ra in the SB against Manning. The Vikings entire second scoring drive the ball only moved because of poor calls by the officials. Put a skirt on Fav-ra if he doesn’t want to get hit, but there was not a single illegal hit on him the entire game.
It’s awesome to see Viqueen fans in here calling NO the Aints. Must suck to have your season ended for you by such a bad team, huh? One that is going to the SB while you’re already knee deep in the “is he going to retire” drama that everyone else is sick of. Frankly there is nothing more appropriate than Dan Marion jr. retiring after throwing what he is known best for, a stupid INT.
The ignorance of Vikings fans in this discussion is amazing.
Let’s put this into proper perspective: Was Favre worth the price for the Vikings this year?
How about…
* Higher TV ratings?
* Higher merchandise revenue?
* More tickets sales and concession revenue?
* Better record in the season and playoffs?
* More national exposure & millions of new fans?
Ziggy brought Favre in to get to the Superbowl, increase his fan base, and help him get a new stadium deal. Would T-Jack or Rosenfels have done so well? Doubt it. Favre had the best statistical career in his life, with 33 TD’s vs. 7 picks (or 38 TD’s & 9 picks overall w/ playoffs).
Unfortunately, Bonehead Brett made an appearance late in the game, with his back against the wall he heaved a desperation pass. The Saints were counting on it too, which is why they kept ramming him into the turf every chance they got. They did it to Warner as well and will do it to Manning. Now the Vikings fans know how Packers fans felt after Favre’s OT INT against the Giants in the ’08 NFC title game! I think Brett lost track of the yardage and assumed that he needed another “big play” to get the team within scoring range.
Ultimately, Chilly is to blame for the 5 yard penalty that put Longwell outside of FG range. Without any added yardage, the ball would have been kicked from the 54 yard line. I think Brett was worried that 5 or 10 yards wouldn’t have been enough, so he forced the pass trying to get 15. Yet in the end, Brett did what many QB’s do in that situation & “choked” by forcing a bad throw.
However, Brett Favre never was, nor ever will be, a “running” quarterback like Vince Young, Mike Vick, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair, or even Aaron Rodgers. No doubt after that late game INT, Ted Thompson, Mark Murphy, and Mike McCarthy were all smiling or smirking, recalling why they chose Rodgers over Favre (besides the age difference). A-Rod would have run for the first down and NOT turned the ball over, giving his team a shot at the last second field goal. Had Favre not thrown the OT pick against the Giants a couple years ago, the Packers would have lost the SB to the Patriots. However, the Vikings had a legitimate shot at beating the Colts in Miami. As Troy Aikman said after Favre’s 2nd INT, Brett will regret that mistake for the rest of his life.
Chilly and Bevell made some bad calls on that last set of downs as well. Instead of running on 1st and 2nd downs (predictable), they should have passed to get the yardage needed for a high percentage field goal, rather than settling for a FG attempt at the outer range of Longwell’s limit.
Regretably, Minny didn’t stay aggressive and the lame play calling proved it. Those plays would have made more sense if the ball was at the 20 instead of the 35 or 40 yard line. Chilly assumed that Favre would get them back within FG range and stay inbounds, then call his last timeout to attempt a last second FG. Too bad Favre threw another INT…one which could have been avoided.
In the end, both parties made a good decision: Favre coming out of retirement and Chilly pursuing a much needed veteran quarterback. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen a season earlier due to Packer management spiting Favre for his waffling. Had he been with Minny last season, the team may have gone to the Superbowl against the Steelers. But Favre needs to commit now and help the team focus on the off season and preseason. Brett needs to go through the same conditioning that he did in ’07 with the Packers to improve his agility and durability. He did an amazing job considering the fact that he missed the summer mini-camps and started with a new team in preseason. Petersen needs to work on his ball handling skills too!
If Favre doesn’t come back, he will regret that decision even more than his INT’s against the Saints and Giants. Physically, the guy could play until his mid 40′s! But does he have his head on straight? He should suck it up and get back to training for the 2010 season with a conditioning coach this spring and show up for the mini-camps this summer: His teammates will respect him more. Although Brett could have won it for the Vikings, he is NOT the only one to blame for the loss.
Petersen takes top honors with his “butter fingers”. Harvin also fumbled, which put the Saints in the red zone. Take away that play, and NO scores a TD less. Add in the TD that Minny should have had before the end of the half (sans the hand off fumble), and MN is up another TD. It is entirely sincere to say that the Vikings SHOULD have won the 2010 NFC title game by DOUBLE DIGITS.
After all is said and done, the Vikings will be even better next season IF Brett Favre returns!
PS: Pat Williams & Kurt Warner should return for another season as well.
Brett can suck my richard! Will you please quit qnd let someone else begin there future. If your playing or the money your a selfish prick. I hope then you lose all your money!
The Vikes did well in ’08 with Gus. He must have gotten hurt pretty bad to suddenly take him out and get beat when the playoffs started. It was apparent though, that Favre’s throwing capabilities put them at a much higher level (yards, td to int ration, kick-ass passes all year). He would have been better served to have played the NFC chamionship without seeing double from cheap targeting.
