I just don't see why you and Hank think it's a problem. The game's too slow? Really? You ever watched baseball?

You change a rule like this and it completely changes the game, tactically and strategically. For something that seems to be a relatively minor nuisance, it sure is a drastic solution.

"I think that’s an overly complicated solution to a non-existent problem"

Well, Henry Abbott thinks it's a problem and I think it's a problem. Just because you don't think it exists doesn't make it non-existent. Free throws kill the flow of a game, especially when a team gets into foul mode trying to come back. Overly complicated? Come on.

Theoretically, there would be no limit to the number of points a team can score on one trip if the defense keeps fouling. Play good defense without fouling and you'll get the ball back.

Re: your #5, Mark Cuban tried that. David Stern himself prefers it that way. But, in fact, we see that there's no real fan support for doing that... that fans actually enjoy all that crap.

Re: free throws, I think that's an overly complicated solution to a non-existent problem, and even if you didn't add the rule revert at the end of the quarter, it's still ridiculous, because it means there's no limit on the amount of points a team could score on one possession. I can only imagine how play would evolve from this rule, but I'm guessing it would get a lot less physical. Teams would drive to the lane on every possession and bigs would just get right out of the way.

Why change a game that's already perfect?! :)

If you're specifically talking about improving the NBA, as someone who greatly prefers the college game I'd have a few suggestions (none of which they'd actually do, but whatever):

1. Shorten the season. It's too long and the individual regular season game means nothing unless there happens to be some bad blood between the teams.

2. Fewer teams should make the playoffs. Cut it back to 12 or 8 teams. More than half the league makes the playoffs right now, that's ridiculous.

3. Change it to a 5 game format for every series up until the finals, and have no more than 1 day off between games. Increases the odds of getting some upsets, and cuts down on the overlong playoffs.

4. Stop giving star players such blatantly obvious preferential treatment from refs.

5. Get rid of canned music/chants. Petty thing I know, but the *bump*bump* Defense *bump*bump* things drive me crazy. If the crowd can't be bothered to give a true homecourt advantage of their own accord, well, then too damn bad for the home team.
