Forget about running up the score – the Vikings’ decision was just stupid
After his team ran up the score in yesterday’s 34-3 win over the Cowboys, I found it comical what Vikings head coach Brad Childress said in his post game presser:
“As Lou Holtz used to say, ‘It’s our job to score points. It’s their job to stop us from scoring points.’ That happens. It wasn’t rubbing it in. It’s just taking care of business and being aggressive at the end of the game.”
After spending some time reading people’s opinions on this topic, it appears that many Minnesota fans are taking Childress’ stance. Hey, the Cowboys’ defenders are paid to stop opponents’ offenses. So if they didn’t want to be scored on, then they shouldn’t have quit on that final play. Also, Keith Brooking is a crybaby whiner that should go back to his crybaby whiner mother and have her feed him out of a bottle labeled: My Little Crybaby.
The other stance that Minnesota fans seem to be taking is that Brett Favre should now be treated like a baby bird and protected at all cost. With the way they’re backing Favre’s every move right now, I wouldn’t be shocked if a group of Viking fans attempted to eat some food and regurgitate it back into Brett’s mouth.
Of course, there are a great deal of people that think the Vikings are classless for what they did, or at the very least displayed poor sportsmanship.
But regardless of what stance you’ve taken on this topic, it’s hard to deny that it was an unnecessary move for the Vikings. The Cowboys were out of timeouts, they couldn’t stop the clock following the two-minute warning and therefore it was virtually impossible that they were going to erase a 24-point deficit at that point. It’s not like this is the BCS and the Vikings needed style points – the game was over and therefore there was no need for a pass in that situation.
I wonder how Minnesota fans that have fully endorsed what the Vikings did would have acted if Favre snapped his femur while dropping back to pass. Think about the outrage that would have ensued had the Vikings’ Super Bowl hopes been dashed on a meaningless play late in a game that they already had locked up. Fans would have been calling for Childress’ head instead of wanting a picture of him and Favre re-painted to resemble “The Creation of Adam” on the Metrodome’s ceiling.
Forget the fact that Brooking and the Cowboys should have stopped the Vikings if they didn’t want to be embarrassed. It was a flat out stupid decision and an unnecessary risk by Childress and Favre to throw in that situation and they’re fortunate that something disastrous didn’t happen.

Give Childress credit. From now on whenever there’s a big spread you know there’s one guy you can count on.
Hey, maybe Childress bet the “over”!
I’m not a Minnesota fan and I’m probably not in the majority, but I don’t believe there’s such a thing as “running up the score”. I believe the offense in these cases is acting naturally, as it’s programmed to do: which is move the chains until you get into the end zone.
What is “proper protocol” in these cases? Turn the ball over on 4th down? I don’t see anything wrong with annihilating an opponent in highly competitive play, especially when it would take extra effort *not* to. Especially when everyone said they were going to come in and tear you down. Or roll through you like a tazmanian devil, or whatever. Especially when your opponent probably talked plenty of shit leading up to the game.
Dr. E,
Right, although I’m not arguing that point here. This article is about how the decision to throw the ball was unwise. It was an unnecessary risk in that situation and COULD have led to an injury to your quarterback.
If it were me, I’d have my third string running back taking the handoff and plowing right into the center of Dallas’ defense while Brett is standing beside me ready to get into the locker room.
Anthony S: I sense some hostility towards Keith Brooking’s! Do you not like that whiny lil back stabbing punk ass bitch? I sure don’t!
As far as the rest it was a stupid move, but it was done… Luckily no one got hurt… Dallas didn’t take their starters out so maybe it was a pride thing… Who knows?
Jay G – I actually loved Brooking when he was a Falcon…right up until the minute he blew that 3rd down pass in Arizona in last year’s playoffs by being out of position. Oh, and when he acted like he had won the Super Bowl when the Cowboys beat the Falcons earlier this season.
That guy racked up tackle numbers by jumping on piles and trailing ball carries for his last three years in Atlanta and everyone talked about him this year like he was the missing piece for Dallas. Yuck.
But in all actuality, my comments about Brooking in the article stem from all the Viking fans calling him a “crybaby.”
What would the fans think “IF” Favre snapped his femur and “would have” ensued. He didn’t snap his femur and would have did not happen. You sound like my brother, we “would have been playing at home if we beat the Bears”. Lets let go of the would haves and could haves and on with the playoffs! GO Vikings! and NO we didn’t run up the score, this is not softball..no 10 run rule. The fans at the game loved it and after all, they paid to be entertained by their team!
It’s a hypothetical, Ann. I know it didn’t happen but that’s not the point.
The point is that Childress and Favre took an unnecessary risk by going for another score. It was stupid decision and I’d be willing to bet that you would be singing a different tune had Favre been carted out of the Metrodome on a stretcher.
That said, I agree – time to move on. It’s Tuesday and this is a dead issue.
It wasn’t a dead issue on Monday but it’s a dead issue 24 hours later on Tuesday. Typical Stalter.
Just kidding!
Yeah, I missed your point. You’re absolutely right. Come to think of it, that was pretty careless. Childress is an idiot.
Ann — Whether or not they ran up the score isn’t up for debate. They did. They threw an unnecessary pass in the endzone and scored a TD. The question is — was it a classless move? And to Anthony’s point, was it a dumb move?
I 100% agree with anthony’s first post. god forbid we don’t see this stupidity out of brad again, say this weekend when we have established a sure trip to the super bowl at the end of the game. A better NFL coach would have gotten their key players out of there given the circumstances or called for a kneel down. The saints game should have become brad’s priority long before the 2 minute warning. I wanted them all out (brett, rice, AP) even on the prior vike’s possession. i dont think brad c. would have played that the same way against his old philly team, for example, making me think he was really trying to stick it to the ‘pokes for some reason. the good news for all of us is that it turned out okay this time. i hope we don’t see a next time.
The saints game should have become brad’s priority long before the 2 minute warning.
Well said – I completely agree.
Favre shouldn’t have been in the game at that point and Brookings should have let it go. If Favre called an audible than he is classless and Brookings is in same boat for chasing him down crying over it. Childress isn’t even the coach so he can’t be blamed for not taking Favre out, Favre runs that team and makes all the decisions. This was proven a few weeks back.
Anthony, yes I would have been singing the blues if Favre got carted out on a stretcher. Glad he didn’t.
