Favre claims that he didn’t guarantee win over Cowboys
Brett Favre is a little peeved that the media misconstrued what he said in a press conference on Wednesday and made it seem like he was guaranteeing a win on Sunday vs. the Cowboys.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports: Brett Favre wasn’t pleased to be informed that he supposedly had guaranteed a Vikings playoff victory Sunday over Dallas earlier this week.
“First of all I’m not guaranteeing anything, and the last thing I ever want to do is be bulletin-board material,” Favre said Thursday.
On Wednesday, Favre said: “Honestly, I see us sitting here next week having this press conference again. If that doesn’t happen, to me it will be a shock.” Favre said all he was trying to do was make it clear he has confidence in himself and his teammates.
“You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” he said. “I just have always been honest. And I probably should be more confident throughout my career. I’ve always kind of kept that to myself.”
Looks like that damn media is trying to dig up something that’s not there. Could he have chosen his words a little more carefully on Wednesday? Yeah, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with what he said. As he noted, he was just trying to show confidence in himself and his teammates. Besides, he’s 0-3 against the Cowboys in the playoffs so why would he be foolish enough to guarantee anything?

What? The media trying create something that is not there? You mean like viewing a coach and his player in an exchange on the sideline, not hearing a word of it, and saying there is friction between the two?
If Favre had said “that team on the other side of the ball is pretty good…there’s a good chance this could be the last game of the season for us”, they’d say he’s completely lost confidence in his coach and his team.
Instead of calling them “reporters” they should rename themselves “interpreters”.
T-Bone – the media may have blown this so called ‘prediction’ out of proportion, but your example of the Favre vs. Childress is piss poor. Let’s see if there’s a trend here:
Mike Holmgren – Authoritarian that expects few audibles, Favre doesn’t free-lance and has success.
Ray Rhodes – Favre free-lances, there’s friction, coach gets canned no success.
Mike Sherman- Favre free-lances, there’s friction, coach gets canned no success.
Mike McCarthy- Favre free-lances, there’s friction, coach helps show player the door.
Eric Mangini- Favre free-lances, there’s friction, coach gets canned no success.
Brad Childress- Favre free-lances, there’s friction, to be continued.
That would be called a trend, but apologists for Brett will say, ‘media conspiricy, that never happened……’
In this case, media running with it. Your example of Childress as ‘media running with it’, crap.
Mike…you almost made a reasonable point until you blamed Mangini’s firing on Favre. That’s when I knew you must be a comedy writer.
Ray Rhodes…inherited a playoff caliber team and went 8-8. His average-at-best record with Philly told them they made a mistake. But it was Favre’s fault?
Mike Sherman…3 division titles, 4 consecutive playoff appearances, but they couldn’t get to the superbowl again with the best QB in the league. Oh yeah, and 3 of their 4 losses in the playoffs were blowouts. But it was Favre’s fault?
Mike McCarthy…wanted to put his own stamp on the team. Didn’t want to wait for Favre to lose his skills so when he waffled on retirement, Big Mac saw the opening and forced Favre’s hand. But it was Favre’s fault?
Mangini…was in so far over his head he needed breathing apparatus. Drove the team into the ground from 10-6 to 4-12 and Favre was the reason he even got to 9-7 in 2008. The Jets management made the decision to bring Favre in and take a shot, which he gave them and got injured, but that was Favre’s fault?
Childress…Made the playoffs in 2008 on defense (only 4 games giving up 20 or more points) and decided to take a shot with Favre, knowing he only has so many prime years of his all-world back. He didn’t have a plan this year other than Tavaris Jackson or the legendary Sage Rosenfels at QB and had to do SOMETHING…but it’s Favre’s fault?
I’m not a Packers fan or a Favre fan but when it comes to the media making something out of nothing, their track record speaks for itself. You give Favre too much credit for these coaching problems (as evidence by your Mangini reference when his firing had absolutely nothing to do with Favre), but that’s Favre’s fault?
After reading your post, I see why you are an expert on “piss poor” examples.
The Boys are gonna roll….38 to 21. Cowboys should win it all this year!
