That's a good one, Dave. I'd argue that was a bigger upset than Texas over USC in the Rose Bowl.

Now Lambda, don't get salty! We paid love to the '06 Rose Bowl in our <a href="http://www.scoresreport.com/2009/12/11/decade-debate-8-greatest-comebacks/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">8 Greatest Comebacks</a> piece.

I guess it's up to personal interpretation, but I don't remember Texas being an underwhelming underdog. USC was a touchdown favorite if I recall, but I don't think the overall notion was that the Longhorns didn't have a shot - especially with Vince Young at quarterback.

I'll argue that App State over Michigan is still the biggest upset to my death (okay, maybe not to my death). It obviously didn't have as much at stake as the Giants-Pats Superbowl game, but NOBODY thought App State would beat the Wolverines (who were a national title contender don't forget) that year. NOBODY. I knew multiple people who took the Giants on the moneyline to beat the Pats.

Either way, it's a good debate because cases could be made for either game.

I'd argue that Juan Martin Del Potro defeating Roger Federer at this years U.S. Open was a bigger upset than Federer over Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001. While Sampras was the best player of his era, Fed is probably the greatest player of all time, and this year he was playing for his sixth consecutive U.S. Open championship.

I can't fault Federer/Sampras too much though, as that was a big upset as well.

Also: I agree with others who are saying that the Giants Superbowl should be number one on the list.

How does the 2005 University of Texas Longhorns victory over USC in the Rose Bowl not even get mentioned on this list? The 05 Trojans at the time were being compared to the greatest college teams of all time. They had a 34 game win streak, nine of which were against ranked opponents. They were the repeating National Champions. They had two Heisman trophy winners on the same team. The hype before the game made the thought of the Trojans losing something almost akin to blasphemy. The game itself was an instant classic, arguably one of the most exciting college games ever played. How can Edmonton beating Detroit or the Warriors taking the Mavs even be on the same scale? Guess having four football games on a list of ten was one too many.

Looking back...excellent point. That's another difference between the two. We knew how good the Patriots were by the way they rifled through the NFL season. They were being called the most dominant ever and their coach was being hailed as one of the greatest. Michigan was ranked #4 in a preseason popularity contest based for the most part on how many starters were returning. Nobody had any realistic idea of how good they were going to be, and we now know they weren't. No doubt, it was a significant victory for App. State and college football. But the Giants upset victory prevented the Pats from being called the greatest team in the history of their sport.

Tough call for #1. Certainly the Pats loss was more important. But there were many people who thought the Giants had a real chance (I took them in the money line).

The App St. win was just a shocker. Looking back, the Michigan program has not recovered, as this also helped lead them to a disastrous hiring of Rich Rod.
