Jim Harbaugh squashes Michigan rumors
Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh recently was asked on Sirius XM’s “Mad Dog Radio” if he would be interested in coaching at Michigan if things didn’t work out with current Wolverine coach Rich Rodriguez.
His response (via the Detroit Free Press):
Host Bruce Murray: “You are a hot prospect now in college football. You are going to be sought after. Do you have outs to go to other jobs should they present themselves in your contract?”
Jim Harbaugh: “Well, I love Stanford and I love the football players here and the coaches here. I’m not going to specifically discuss my contract but I hope to have the honor of coaching here, Bruce, for a very long time.”
Murray: “But you’ve heard the rumors and I’m not saying that you would entertain it. You know if something doesn’t work out with Rich Rodriguez at Michigan, as an alum you’re going to be called by them … ”
Harbaugh: “Let me just stop you right there, Bruce. This is big game week. This is Cal week, and as you would understand, all my focus and our focus has to be on that. So if we’re going to keep going into this I’ve got other things that are more pressing. … This week is just one of those weeks where the focus really has to be on the game we’ve got coming up.”
Good for Harbaugh for not getting roped into saying something that he would probably regret later. He didn’t come out and say that he wouldn’t coach at Michigan; instead he kept the focus on Stanford and its upcoming battle with Cal this Saturday. It wouldn’t be fair to his players or his fellow coaches if he stoked the Michigan-head coaching flames three days before a big game against a key rival. Furthermore, it would be disrespectful to Rodriguez for Harbaugh to talk about a job that isn’t his.
I know he has ties to Michigan because he played there, but I hope the powers at be put together a fair extension so that he can stay at Stanford. They were the ones to give him his first shot and it would be nice to see a college football head coach show some loyalty once in awhile (although one could argue that he has loyalties to Michigan, too).

Go blue – Stanford a great school, but Jim is a Michigan man. We need he him back to bring back the football and academics. Tired of hearing the spread takes time, and the talent when RR showed up was low at Michigan. He drove several players to the NFL one year early, and several soon to be NFL players to other colleges. His offense is terrible, and is defense is worse. Time to increase the unemployment in Michigan by a coaching staff.
Please, keep this rumor going one more year. RR went from 2-6 in bigten play to 1-7. Improvement I think not. Can’t win in a real conference and needs to go back to a bigeast make-it-up-as-you-go conference. He has shown that he can pour it on the weak teams but folds against any real team. Anyway, Harbaugh should be “The Man” at UM by the end of next year.
More about Harbaugh going to Michigan Draft Jim Harbaugh
I heard about this rumur today when watching iowa osu game i was on the way home from mich wis game even tho we lost any way i heard this and popped my head and said FUCK YA a real coach who knows our triditon who knows michigan way and some one who gets into the game RR is long over duh and should pack his bags.
Michigan should hire Harbaugh on Monday. But my fear is that he will want to go to the NFL like his brother.
Yeah. Great job Jim for Keeping the focus where it should be (Cal Game). But lets be real. Stanford is a winning football team that can’t sell it. One sell-out all year. Michigan sells itself every-week. With Harbaugh back…..too big to pass up. Excellent Job at Stanford, but it’s time to fulfill destiny.
Somehow David Brandon is going to screw this up. Should be a slam dunk… GO BLUE!!!
I THINK STANFORD IS THE PLACE FOR JIM HARBAUGH HE WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET .HE STAYS FOR ANOTHER YEAR WITH LUCK HOPEFULLY. IF IT IS ABOUT MONEY I BELIEVE STANFORD HAS JUST ALITTLE BIT OF MONEY TO PAY HIM . MR. HARBAUGH I RESPECT THE HARD NOSE FOOTBALL YOU ARE TEACHING PLAYING BIG10 FOOTBALL IN THE PAC 10.HARD WORK PAYS OFF DON’T LEAVE STANFORD AND CREATE YOUR OWN DESTINY. ITS YOUR LEGACY KNOW ONE ELSES FROM ;HUGE PENNSYLVANIA FAN
Jim Harbaugh was a great QB and a good coach. I don’t think it’s time to right RR off just yet. His offense does work as advertised. It puts up points. The defense is another story. Robinson must go because his defense obviously doesn’t work in the Big 10 (maybe somewhere else). If Michigan can get the defense together they could be a very good team. Just can’t see starting all over gain from scratch. This offense works fine.
if Harbaugh doesn’t come home blame the one person who would have screwed this up, screwed up with Les Miles, screwed up with RichRod and has basically screwed everything up she has touched… University president Mary Sue Coleman. Michigan fans should be calling for her head first then Rich Rods otherwise history may repeat itself
