Ray Allen elbows Anderson Varejao in the groin…
…and I don’t blame him.
You can see that Varejao locked Allen’s elbow and wouldn’t let go, throwing him to the floor. Everybody focuses on the elbow to the groin, but what Varejao did was just as bad. Why is he locking Allen’s arm up on the free throw? Is he trying to injure him? If Varejao releases Allen’s arm there, nothing happens.

“Just as bad” as elbowing a guy in the stones? Please. Who knows what was happening there, but that was a cheap shot by Allen.
Uh…yeah. “Who knows what was happening there?” Take your Cavs glasses off for a second. Varejao locked Allen’s outstretched (i.e. vulnerable) arm up and twisted him to the ground. He could have dislocated his elbow. And yes, that’s just as bad as elbowing a guy in the stones, if not worse. Varejao should be wearing a cup anyway.
My Cavs glasses, huh? So just because I root for the Cavs means I can’t have an objective opinion on this play? Interesting.
What I meant by “Who knows what was happening there” is you have no clue what actually transpired on the court that led to this incident. What caused Varejao to spin Allen around like that? I doubt he was thinking, “Wow, wouldn’t it be great to dislocate Ray Allen’s elbow just for shits and giggles?” And it certainly looked pretty harmless — I’ve seen dozens of similar plays with guys underneath the hoop jockeying for position. What makes this one malicious enough to warrant an elbow to the groin?
“Varejao should be wearing a cup anyway.” Ah, all’s forgiven then.
An objective view wouldn’t include a dismissive comment like “Please.” — but that’s just my opinion. I think most fans have a tough time being completely objective about their team and if you don’t see how a player might react this way when he’s twisted to the ground by his elbow then that’s fine. I don’t think Varejao was trying to injure Allen, but it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have by doing what he did. And I’m sure that’s what Ray Ray was thinking when he was being thrown down awkwardly by his extended arm. It was a cheap play by Varejao (who has a reputation for that) and Allen responded in kind.
I was dismissive about your contention that Varejao’s actions were “just as bad” as Allen’s, not about the play itself. Clearly, Varejao did something wrong (he got a “T”), but that kind of extra-curricular activity happens pretty frequently underneath the hoop. It’s not often that you see a guy elbow another guy in the groin.
And I do, in fact, see why Allen retaliated — most players would have reacted in some way — but his specific action amounted to a cheap shot. Stand face-to-face with the guy, don’t throw an elbow below the belt.
I don’t think objective views are dismissive of opposing contentions.
And I don’t agree that this happens all the time. Guys get locked up quite often, but usually the inside guy (in this case Varejao), the guy who controls how far it goes, wises up and let’s go. It’s not often that a guy gets twisted to the ground with his extended arm. I agree that Ray Ray threw a cheap elbow, but Varejao’s actions were cheap as well. And they were more dangerous from an injury standpoint, which is why I think they are/were “just as bad.”
“I don’t think objective views are dismissive of opposing contentions.”
I see you’ve brought your soapbox with you today. Excellent.
I didn’t say that it happens “all the time” — my words were “pretty frequently”. And I wasn’t implying that this exact play happens all that frequently, but this type of play certainly does. Some extra pushing or shoving after the whistle, jawing, general chest thumping, whatever. Nut shots? Not so much.
I do, however, agree that what Varejao did carries a higher injury risk. His technical was deserved.
I think we’re at the point where we’re just going to have to agree to disagree.
You guys are both retarded. Anderson Varajao doesn’t have any penis or balls for Ray Ray to injure, and he probably hurt his own elbow blasting the stump.
Obviously you have never heard of adrenaline. Just because you get hit between the legs does not mean you automatically double over in pain. It is possible to get hit down there and be able to function.
All the game and Ray Allen’s actions and comments after the game prove is that Ray Allen has no class. He is whiny and a very poor representation for what is generally a very good sports city.
bigplay — So no comment on Varejao’s actions that preceded the elbow? I thought it was a dirty play. They both were.
celtics were just pissed at that point in the game and were taking cheap shots just before this happened. Celtics and even Garder belt Garrnet are dirty. Allen has been dirty player all his career. screw Celtics. they are going down this year..cheap shot allen
