Ha, yep you are right.

I'm a Laker fan, so seeing Bill Simmons wrong really makes my day.

I'm loving your site right now!

Keep up the good work. Homers are one thing, but when they have given free reign to spew their nonsense all over the place it gets pretty frustrating

I guess he's saying that the two point shooter -- since he shoots four free throws -- is getting fouled twice in an "and 1" situation and fouled once on the shot for two free throws. This assumes no fouls on the floor.

So he takes 12 shots, is fouled once on another shot (shot doesn't count if there's a two-shot foul), creates two assists, turns the ball over once and has one of his misses tapped in by a teammate.

12 shots (6 makes + two "and 1s" = 14 points)
1 foul (1 of 2 = 1 point)
two assists (4 points)
1 turnover
1 tip in (already counted as a possession since it was a missed shot)

16 possessions...21 points -- he can't even add his own points up correctly. So I'd say that's four extra possessions...still not a good comparison.

John Paulsen:

I get what you're saying for the most part, but I don't think it is necessarily 6 extra possessions. Each foul could come during a shot, and 3 AND-1s are not 3 extra possessions.

I agree that Simmons' argument is full of holes and shows his lack of knowledge but, giving him the benefit of the doubt (God knows why I would do that), it is more like 3 extra possessions, in my opinion.

Martin - That's a great point. I was so excited that Bill was trying to defend his "no three's" argument that I missed the extra possessions. In his scenario, the shooter makes six of 12 two-pointers (12 points) and then also draws three fouls, makes two assists, makes three of four free throws, has one turnover and has one of his shots tipped in.

That's six extra possessions (3 fouls, 2 assists, 1 turnover) and one missed shot results in a tip in.

A more realistic comparison is that on 12 possessions, LeBron drives and goes 3 of 6 from the field (6 points), gets fouled twice and makes three free throws (3 points), makes two assists (4 points) and turns the ball over once. Let's say one shot is tipped in (2 points), but that's generous. That's 15 points total. Yes, it's better to go to the hole, but LeBron still needs to be a threat from three so the "no three's" argument is unreasonable.

Bill's argument is also deceptive because he apparently is giving the guy shooting two's 18 or 19 possessions then the poor guy shooting threes.
He doesn't use facts, he merely uses inaccurate exaamples. His guy shooting twos gets extra foul shots, gets assists, made a turnover, and apparently did all of this only in the paint and never from 10 feet out. None of which have anything to do with 2's vs. 3's and value as a scoring option.

Gamblers should eat him alive for not knowing about futures markets. If you have an idea and want to express that idea in your column, it might be a wise decision to go ahead and make sure that the idea doesn't already exist.
