Rookie Matt Ryan is the real deal
If one were to grade the success of Thomas Dimitroff in his first year as general manager for the Atlanta Falcons, there’s no doubt he would receive close to perfect marks. The hire of Mike Smith as head coach and the drafting Matt Ryan – two of Dimitroff’s first moves as GM – have been slam-dunks thus far.
Ryan (22 of 30, 301 yards, 1 TD) was absolutely unbelievable in the Falcons’ exciting 22-20 win over the Bears in Week 6. Chicago was definitely at a disadvantage playing without their two starting corners (Peanut Tillman left the game early with an injury), but most of Ryan’s throws were on the money and well-timed, including his perfect 26-yard toss to Michael Jenkins with 11 seconds remaining in the game to set up Jason Elam’s 48-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.
Give the Falcons credit. They knew they had something special in Ryan and even though the success rate for rookie quarterbacks in this league has been low, they believed in him and made him a starter anyway. He’s a young man playing on a young team, but his maturity so far has been incredibly impressive. And how about the play of the Falcons? This is a team that goof ball Dr. Z of SI.com predicted to win one game this year and they’re 4-2. They’ve got the makings of a nice team.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t say anything about Kyle Orton, who was outstanding himself on Sunday. He drove Chicago 77 yards on 11 plays to set up a 17-yard TD to Rashied Davis, which temporarily gave the Bears a 20-19 lead. Orton has really distinguished himself as a quality quarterback in Chicago, which is something the Bears have been craving for a long time.

First of all, kudos to the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan looks like he is going to be the “real-deal” and has already made Falcon fans say Michael who?
Having your corners out hurt is no excuse for the Bears. Those corners had nothing to do with the two dive plays called at the goal line by the Bears. They had nothing to do with the call for a squib kick when you are ahead by 1 point with 11 seconds left.
I have been a Bears fan for over 30 years. The coaching staff is incredibly incompetent. Ron Turner couldn’t coach at Illinois, but he calls the plays. The defensive coach Babich got the job because he is Lovie Smith’s buddy (they fired Ron Rivera to get him). And Lovie Smith hasn’t got a clue.
I am starting a drive right here on The Scores Report to get Lovie Smith replaced by Mike Singletary, a real Bear.
The Bears have lost 3 games by a total of 8 points. That tells you something about a team’s attitude exemplified by the coaching staff.
Again, congrats to the Falcons, they won the game and looked like a far better coached team than the Bears. But, then again, that happens in every game the Bears are in.
Well said, Da Bear. We here at The Scores Report will foster your drive to get Mike Singletary as head coach. I’m sure plenty of Bear fans feel the same way.
I’m actually shocked Singletary doesn’t have a head coaching job yet. He’s interviewed for positions, but still gets passed up. If the Bears continue not to play four quarters, maybe you’ll get your wish Da Bear…
Matt Ryan looks great for a rookie. He looks good, period.
The most impressive thing about Matt Ryan are his decisions. He rarely gives up the stupid rookie play. Until Michael Vick broke my heart I was his biggest fan. Arthur Blank has proven to me that he is a competitor, instead of simply a ticket seller. Matt Ryan will win a Super Bowl with the Falcons. Period.
Atlanta John – I hope you’re right! I love what I’ve seen from Ryan so far and I have high hopes myself! Vick got me myh friend.
