Every color commentary guy talks about how good it is to take "judgment calls" away from the officials, but if the refs had the option to call the 5-yard penalty there, they probably would have. Now officials have to decide if a facemask grab is a 15-yard penalty or nothing at all, and it seems like more and more facemasks are going uncalled as a result. While the old rule was in effect, I don't remember too many times when I was watching a game thinking, "wow, the ref should have called a 15-yarder instead of a 5-yarder there" or vice versa. It was pretty simple. Innocent facemask grab = 5 yards. Facemask grab with twist = 15 yards. There's arguably more judgment required for the new rule than the old one.
