If the 4th down is manageable, going for it and saving for the FG later might make more sense. I was speaking in general terms and directing my opinion more at the teams that go for it on 4th and 10 when they have a FG opportunity there for the taking. Why leave points on the field? A 4th and 7 might be a situation to kick instead, but a 4th and 5 has at least a 50% chance of success. It is easier to kick a field goal, so why not save the easier part for the final seconds, rather than having to get all the way to the end zone for your final score?
