well I'd say yes to all your judgement except for Ben Gordon I think he's better than those you've mentioned player like Mike Miller, Rip Hamilton and etc. and I think you can't compare Mike Dunleavy to this rank he's not good plain and simple he doesn't deserve 9.8 million he is the one that's over paid.

Nice post, I liked how you also compared these players and their contracts to other similar players in the game. Looking forward to part 2.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't really use Randolph's salary for the reasons you mentioned, but I listed him as a comparable player in certain cases just to give everyone an idea just out of whack some salaries can be.

As for the bench players, Childress is a special case because he's playing behind three very good young players - Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith. He's playing about 30 minutes a game (which is just a bit less than the average starter plays), so I think most teams are looking at him as a 4th or 5th starter, glue-guy type. Moreover, he was on the court and Williams was on the bench in crunch time during the Hawks' playoff series against the Celtics, so he's basically a starter for Atlanta.

As for Smith, the two things that are holding him back are his attitude and his defense. He plays behind Iverson and Anthony, so I think most GMs would say that he has a starter's talent. I suspect that he'll get at least the mid-level ($5.5-$6.0 M) this year or next.

I like your analysis, but I have to disagree with a couple of points.

First of all, Zach Randolph's contract should not be the basis for any comparisons. It's clearly out of line considering just how un-tradeable he has become.

I also think that bench players - like Childress and J.R. Smith - can't be compared to starters, regardless of equivalent PER. PER is one of 100 stats that can be used to evaluate players, and it's important to remember that a bench player on one team is most likely a bench player on most teams. Granted, there are exceptions, but I believe your evaluations of J.R. Smith and Childress are a couple of million/year too high.

Still, a great list.
