I'm glad the pistons drafted darko milicic. If they draft one of the other guys, the pistons probably don't feel the need to trade for rasheed wallace. I'm especially glad the pistons didn't take dwayne wade, because who wants a guy who needs and anti-gravity wheelchair to get carted off because of a separated shoulder.

I think the same could be said for a 2008 Dwyane Wade and a 2008 Chris Bosh.

If the Blazers would have taken Barkley, pairing him with Drexler, would have given them just as powerful of a duo.

In the end of it all, MJ still is the biggest blunder because he's MJ. Name a team in the NBA, from Atlanta to Washington, who would take a 1984 Jordan onto their 2008 squad?

That's correct, he was a rookie and not yet their greatest player. However, the Blazers felt that they were set at shooting guard, and since he and MJ were such similar players, it seemed like a better idea to go with Bowie, who was a 7'1" true center and a good prospect at the time. Drexler averaged over 17 points a game in his second season, so I think Portland knew they had their scoring wing of the future. Teams don't often duplicate their strengths like that.

Bowie was actually pretty decent (10.0 points and 8.6 rebounds) in his rookie season and was starter-caliber for most of his career. (He even averaged 15 points and 10 boards for the Nets in 89-90.) The same cannot be said for Darko. At least not yet.

I'm not arguing that it was the right choice to choose Bowie over Jordan - after all, I have it as my second biggest blunder of the modern era.

Actually, the year before MJ was drafted, Drexler only averaged 7.7 PPG and started only 3 games his rookie year. He wasn\'t their best player yet. The Blazers could have always put Drexler at the SF spot (His secondary position his whole career), playing MJ at the 2 guard. That would have been the greatest scoring tandem of all time.

The Blazers already had one of the best shooting guards in the league in Drexler, which makes it understandable that they'd pass on Jordan. How often does a team draft a player in the first round that plays the same position as their best player? The Pistons had no weak spots and could have gone in any direction, and they ended up with Darko. They had a 75% chance to end up with a star.
