All excellent points, JL. Redd is a cerebral player and a hard worker. He wants to win. If he (and Mo Williams) can buy into Scott Skiles' new direction, the Bucks could be in for a good season. They'll probably make a change here or there, but they'll give Redd, Mo, Yi and Bogut a half of a season to gel before making any major moves. If they're shopping Redd now, they're looking for a much better deal than what Cleveland could offer.

There are a few reasons this deal won't happen. FIRST of all, Skiles should be given a chance to see what he can do with the current roster. No changes should be made until he's had a chance to figure out who goes and who stays. SECOND, why would you make a division rival better? Trades like this usually send players to the other conference, not a few miles away. THIRD, Cleveland's best trade piece is Varejao, and he's got his head so far up his behind (at least when it comes to his market value) that no GM in their right mind should take him. He's not worth the money he's looking for. FINALLY, and most importantly, the offers for Redd are only going to get better once the regular season starts. There's no reason for the Bucks to make a move now - they should see wait and see what teams are willing to do to get Redd for a final push just before the all-star break.

Varejao and Gibson are both nice role players, but they are just fringe starters. Gibson still needs to be re-signed this year and Varejao will likely opt out after the 2009 season. So assuming Gibson signs a deal in the $3 M to $4 M range, and Varejao gets the $8-$10 M he's looking for, the Bucks would have $11-$14 M wrapped up in those two players. They'd be better off with a sidekick type like Redd for $15-$17 M and hope that Bogut continues to develop and/or Yi Jianlian turns into a star.

Typically, to pry a star away from a bottom feeder, a team has to give up expiring salaries to match the star, a good young prospect with star potential, and a draft pick or two. There are two problems with a potential Cavs-Bucks deal: 1) the Bucks have enough talent to make the playoffs in the East with good coaching (hence, the Skiles hire) and 2) the Cavs just don't have a young player that is a probable star.

The good news for the Cavs is that they have a couple of big salaries expiring over the next two seasons, which could fetch them a Gasol- or Redd-like player from a team that's in full rebuilding mode, like the Grizzlies (or the Bucks, if Skiles is unable to navigate a turnaround). Szczerbiak's contract expires after next season and Wallace's expires the following season. However, if they go for the quick fix or make desperate moves, they will only continue to tread water.

Very interesting. Is there any deal Cleveland could put together with the expiring contracts for it to make sense for the Bucks? Would they be interested in Varejao?
