The article is still valid a year later. The Cavs have surrounded Lebron with garbage and will not win a championship. It's a scandal and a damned shame that the talent surrounding arguably the best player in the league is sooo bad. How in world can they win with below average spot up shooters and old decrepit has beens? Gilbert/Ferry/Brown are insane.

Well, they had the best regular season record, so I feel pretty good about them. Mo Williams has been great. But this piece was written almost a year ago (before the Mo trade) and LeBron decided to play defense this season -- that has a lot to do with the Cavs' success.

At the time, I heard a rumor that they already had Hughes locked up with a less expensive deal and didn't offer Redd the max deal, but ESPN reported it the other way, so maybe that criticism is unfair. If they would have taken the Cavs offer, they would have left $20 million on the table due to the extra year the Bucks and Sonics could offer. Of course, they would have probably been able to re-sign at the end of the Cavs' deal for at least $10 million (though I don't know about Allen the way he's playing). So Redd gave up playing with LeBron for around $10 million. Tough call depending on what's important to you.

Redd also said that the Bucks were the ones that gave him a shot in the NBA (drafting him in the second round), so loyalty was a factor as well. Allen had no such loyalties to Seattle, so he was probably the dumb one not to sign with Cleveland, though I don't know that the Cavs would want him at that price now.

Good post, but your #5 isn't a fair criticism. They had a max deal ready for Michael Redd that was hand delivered to him the minute they went into free agency. Then they followed with a max deal for Allen. Both were stupid and passed on the chance to take max money to play with LeBron. Redd for sure would have been a perfect compliment and they probably would have won a championship.
