Shockey, Strahan, Umenyiora say ‘no thanks’ to Dub-ya
The Super Bowl champion New York Giants were honored by President George W. Bush at the White House Wednesday. Well, most of the Giants.
(There were a few key players not in attendance. Among them were: TE Jeremy Shockey, DEs Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora and LB Antonio Pierce. Former Giants S Gibril Wilson, now with the Raiders, was there.)
Those players probably had better things to do. Lord knows Shockey can be complaining about something somewhere.

Sorry, call me old fashioned, but how many citizens get a chance “to be honored” by the President of the United States? Regardless of what you think of George W. Bush, it should be a high honor for any American to have an opportunity like this. Shame on these guys. Just goes to show what is important to professional athletes these days.
First-term W? Maybe. Second-term W? No way.
Obviously, these guys disagree with his politics/actions so much that they don’t want to meet the man. Appearing at the White House could be seen as a show of support for what he’s done. And maybe, just maybe, something penetrated the little bubble he lives in and W got wind that there were Giants that didn’t want to meet him.
I like it that they stood by their convictions. In the case of Shockey, he was probably just hungover or something.
I was about to say – I highly doubt Shockey was trying to make some political stand. And I have a hard time believing the rest of those guys were either, but I could be wrong.
Yeah, maybe politics had nothing to do with it. In that case, shame on those guys.
