Wiley craps all over Falcons new head coach
The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly made an offer to Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith to become their new head coach. On ESPN’s “First Take”, one of Smith’s former players, Marcellus Wiley, called him “a puppet” to Jags’ head coach Jack Del Rio.
Wow, tell us how you really feel, Marcellus.
This seems like a safe hire for the Falcons and there’ s certainly nothing wrong with that after the Bobby Petrino fiasco last year. I don’t know why a guy like Smith would be more impressive than Rex Ryan or Mike Singletary, but obviously new Falcons’ GM Tom Dimitroff sees a guy that he can work with and help get Atlanta back on the right track. The bottom line is that the Falcons need to bring stability and motivation back into a fragile locker room. If he can do that like Jack Del Rio obviously does in Jacksonville, then Smith was a good hire. If he’s just going to be a “yes man” for Dimitroff, than the Falcons might be looking for another head coach in three years.

Who? I thought they were waiting for the Giants run to be over and get their coordinator?
It really is a hard Team to root for anymore, not that we do here in Tampa. But really, they have had nothing but issues for the last few years and I don’t see anything on the Horizon to trun this ship around.
The Parcells loss was painful and they really needed somebody like that to take away the Vick story.
I think they should bring Mike Ditka back.
That would cause some interest….or something…
My God don’t hire another faceless person.
I think a story is what they got out of Bobby Petrino and how did that turn out? I think a story is what they were looking for with Bill Parcells and after he left in three years, then what?
What Arthur Blank and new GM Thomas Dimitroff needed to do was stop worrying about the press conferences and start concentrating on the gridiron. You get the fans and good publicity back by winning football games – not hiring the flashy name to drum up interest.
Mike Ditka would have been a nice headline, but when the Falcons went 3-13 under him, what does that solve? Once again they would be a joke. Who knows if Smith was the right hire, but it sounds like (other than what Wiley said) he knows football more than he knows about talking to the press.
Believe it or not, the Falcons needed to make this kind of hire; stay out of the headlines and concentrate on football again.
