Tribe now one win away from WS

Indians 7, Red Sox 3
Cleveland exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning while cruising to a 7-3 win over Boston and taking a commanding 3-1 lead in the ALCS. The Indians are now one win away from facing the Colorado Rockies in the World Series.

The Tribe didn’t get their first hit until the fourth inning, but their bats awoke shortly thereafter. With two outs in the fifth inning, Casey Blake hit a solo shot to left field to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead. Asdrubal Cabrera then reached on a line drive that careened off of Boston pitcher Tim Wakefield’s glove, scoring Franklin Gutierrez from third. Victor Martinez followed with a run-scoring single and Johnny Peralta hit a three-run dinger to push Cleveland’s lead to 6-0. Blake then singled in another run before the Red Sox could get the final out.

The Red Sox showed some fight in the top of the sixth, getting back-to-back-to-back solo home runs from Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. The effort went for naught, however, as the mighty Boston lineup failed to muster any runs after that point.

Fantasy impact of Chambers trade

FOXSports.com reports that the Chargers have acquired wide receiver Chris Chambers from the Dolphins for a 2008 second round pick. Here’s a quick look at fantasy implications from the trade:

1. Ted Ginn Jr. is about to see his role increased. He only has three receptions for 82 yards, but he’s averaging over 27 yards a catch, which could signify Cam Cameron loves his deep threat potential. Don’t drop a quality starter, but if you have a bench spot open and Ginn’s available, he’d be a decent option in a PPR league as a WR3.

2. Vincent Jackson is about to see his role decreased. Other than one week, Jackson has not cashed in on his preseason “sleeper” status. His trade value has obviously dipped, but now might be the time to see what you could get for a guy who just turned into the fourth or fifth option in the Chargers offense.

3. As far as Chambers goes, I’m optimistic about his potential in San Diego. He’s been a victim of poor quarterback play over the years and now he goes from a winless Miami team to an immediate contender. Maybe the trade will rejuvenate him. He’ll also benefit from teams keying on LT and Antonio Gates, which may mean more big play opportunities. Don’t trade the wife and kids for him, but see what his owner would want in a trade.

Power Rankings: Week 6

Here’s a weekly look at the top and bottom five in the NFL:

1. New England Patriots (6-0)
Previous Rank: 1
Can everyone stop talking about the Patriots going 16-0 please? Yeah, they’re an unbelievable juggernaut, but 6-0 is a long ways away from 16-0. Watch as the season wears on, because some team with nothing to play for just might trip these guys up.

2. Indianapolis Colts (5-0)
Previous Rank: 2
A healthy Marvin Harrison and Joseph Addai + a red-hot Jacksonville team + Monday night football = best game on Week 7 schedule. The only variable worth mentioning, however, is that Tony Kornheiser will still be part of the MNF broadcast team.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1)
Previous Rank: 4
The Broncos haven’t played up to their potential this season, but playing at Mile High is still a legitimate test I can’t wait to see if Pittsburgh can pass.

4. Dallas Cowboys (5-1)
Previous Rank: 3
The Cowboys fought hard in the first half against the Pats, but eventually the secondary couldn’t hang with Brady to Moss for four quarters. Unfortunately for Dallas, the secondary looks like it could be a huge issue all season.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1)
Previous Rank: 5
This is a nasty team to face when they can run the ball and put up points. Can the Jags prove they’re a legit contender with a win at home against Indy? I’m willing to bet they give the Colts a run for their money.

28. New York Jets (1-4)
Previous Rank: 26
The Jets have stated that they have no intention to trade or bench QB Chad Pennington. So let me take a stab at what happens this week when Gang Green plays at Cincinnati: Pennington completes a high number of passes, but for a small amount of yards. He doesn’t throw any touchdowns and is eventually picked off in the final moments of the game while trying to move the ball quickly downfield. Bengals 20, Jets 13. That sound about right Jets fans?

29. Buffalo Bills (1-4)
Previous Rank: 30
We’ll see this week if the Bills’ Week 5 effort against Dallas was just a mirage or an indication that this team is moving in the right direction. The Ravens are clearly the better team, but they’re flawed and definitely beatable, especially with the game being played in Buffalo.

30. Atlanta Falcons (1-5)
Previous Rank: 28
It’s clear that the Falcons need to clean house and allow Bobby Petrino to get the personnel that fit his offense. He needs a big bruiser in the backfield and a quarterback that doesn’t play not to lose. As always, Joey Harrington isn’t the only reason why this team is struggling. But it’s clear as day that he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a consistent starter in this league. He always plays not to lose.

31. Miami Dolphins (0-6)
Previous Rank: 32
What happened to this once proud defense? The Browns offense has drastically improved, but they shouldn’t be scoring 41 points against a defense that features Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Joey Porter, Channing Crowder and Donovan Darius.

32. St. Louis Rams (0-6)
Previous Rank: 31
Marc Bulger has been cleared to start again, but does it really matter? With Steven Jackson still out and the defense giving up 30-plus points a game, Bulger at less than 100% isn’t going to make much of a difference.

Who’s your top and bottom five?

Rockies make history, Tribe go up 2-1

Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 4
Memo to Eric Byrnes: The Rockies aren’t, “lucky” they’re quite for real. After defeating Arizona 6-4 on Monday to complete a four game sweep, the Rockies advanced to their first World Series appearance in the history of their 14-year franchise. Matt Holiday went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, while Seth Smith hit a two-run double in the fourth to propel surging Colorado. The win pushes their postseason record to 7-0, which matches a record set by the Cincinnati Reds in 1976. As for Byrnes, who called the Rockies “lucky” before Game 3 of this series, he went a combined 2 for 17 with only two RBI in the four-game sweep.

Indians 4, Red Sox 2
Behind a solid pitching performance by Jake Westbrook and the resurgence of Kenny Loften, Cleveland took a 2-1 lead in the ALCS with a 4-2 win over Boston. Westbrook pitched 6.2 innings, gave up just two runs on seven hits and struck out two. Loften sparked the Tribe’s offense in the second with a two-run dinger off Red Sox’s starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, while Asdrubal Cabrera went 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the fifth. Boston cut Cleveland’s lead in half when Jason Varitek hit a two-run homer in the seventh, but the rally fell short thereafter.
