Interesting breakdown of how the best offenses in the league fared a year after they were the top dog. As you noted, there usually was a reason for why an offense faltered a year after it was ranked No. 1; but there doesn’t appear to be any clear-cut reason why the Saints have dropped.
Here’s one thing to note about New Orleans – teams now have a year’s (18 games to be exact) worth of game film on Sean Payton’s offense. That’s 18 games worth of scouting his tendencies, what formations he likes to use, as well as how he game plans for different defenses. Payton is quickly finding out that even his offense can be exposed.
Of course it doesn’t help that Drew Brees has looked uncomfortable in the pocket and is turning the ball over at an alarming rate…
