Let’s start the week with a couple of questions from Scorpion:
Scorpion says:
Hi,
My first QB is Jon Kitna, should I be concern?
My back-up QB is Grossman, should I start him instead?
Would you start Plaxico over Mark Clayton and Drew Carter?
I’m concern about his back and Eli Manning’s consistency, also their O-line.
Would love your advice. Thanks!
Kitna is back at practice so you shouldn’t be concerned. Start him.
Right now, it looks like Plaxico will start, but pay attention as the week goes on. Clayton is dinged up as well.
Who would you start in week 1 – Hasselback or Rivers?
G – they are comparable players, but Hass has a much better matchup against the Bucs than Rivers does (vs. CHI). I’d go with Hass.
JP – Thanks for the Draft Prep advice. What do you think about my team? I’m thinking Championship…
QB: Hasselbeck
RB1: Gore (keeper)
RB2: McGahee (keeper)
Flex: McAllister (keeper)
WR1: Marvin Harrison
WR2: T.J. Who’s Yo Momma
WR3: Donald Driver
TE: Jeremy Shockey
DEF: Patriots
Bench: Matt Scaub, Chester Taylor, DJ Hackett, Patrick Crayton, Owen Daniels, Cowboys DEF, Michael Bush (IR).
Thanks Paul! I have Jacksonville defense, and Arizona defense as my back-up… is Arizona defense better than Buffolo? Buffolo D is available…
Gator Bait – I’m not the biggest fan of McGahee, but I still like your squad a lot. It looks like you decided to cut Bulger and keep McAllister. Hass is a guy who has been slipping of late, but is a bounce back candidate at QB. I wouldn’t be happy with Schaub as my backup. WRs look really solid.
Scorpion – Just about any defense is better than Arizona’s. I’d grab Buffalo.

I have to start 2 RB’s (Gore,Portis,T.Bell, or L.Jordan). I am leaning to Gore & Jordan wk 1. Thoughts?
Also, I need 2 WR’s (M.Harrison, R.Moss,Cotchery,D.Bennett, & Porter). I am thinking the obvious of Harrison & Moss, unless word is Moss will be limited, then I am lost. Who do you play #2?
Lastly, wk 1, I would be safer going McMichael over JT Smith @ TE, correct?
Gore and Jordan look good.
I’d go with Marvin and Cotchery unless Moss is sure to play. NE is notoriously tight-lipped about injuries and I’d rather have the sure thing in there (Cotch) than an iffy Moss.
I assume you mean LJ Smith. In that case, I’d go with McMichael until LJ is healthy.
JP – Actually, I was able to deal Bulger for a 3rd round pick days before the draft. That allowed me to pick up Driver and Housh and supplement Hasselbeck at QB.
Agree on McGahee but he was a keeper – hit or miss this year in BAL.
A lot of guys like Schaub in my league so I may be able to trade him away if he gets warm in the coming weeks. I really like Garrard as a waiver wire replacement. Call me crazy, but I view Garrard as being just as productive as Vince Young this year (hold me to this if you’d like).
OK, you’re crazy.
I like Garrard OK, but Young’s rushing yards are golden.
Hi, My two QB’s are Vince Young and Jay Cutler. I was planning on starting Young for most of the games and just have Cutler as a backup but now I’m starting to wonder. Young and Tennessee play the Jags week one and they have a strong D that shut Young down pretty well last season. And Cutler with Denver’s run game play buffalo week one. Should I start Vince Young against the Jags or Jay Cutler against the Bills? Who will likely score more fantasy points this week? Thanks!
Greg – I have the same Young/Cutler decision to make in one of my leagues. On one hand, Cutler seems to have the better matchup, though I wouldn’t say that BUF is easy; it’s kind of a mediocre matchup. On the other hand, Young has a tough matchup with a very stingy JAX DT. Last season, Young faced the Jags twice. In the first game he threw for 163 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT, while rushing for just 14 yards on 4 carries. In the second game, he threw for just 85 yards with no TDs or INTs, and ran for only 4 yards on 4 attempts.
JAX has been able to contain Young’s legs, so it would be wise to stay away from Vince here. I think Cutler is the play here.
It’s leon from last year back again!
Thanks for taking my question! Sadly, I got stuck with either Chester Taylor or Julius Jones as my 2nd RB. Which one should I choose this week and overall?
JP, which of the Jackson Two do you like better as a flex play in a PPR league: Vincent Jackson (vs. CHI) or Brandon Jackson (vs. PHI)? I could also throw DeAngelo Williams into the mix but he seems too sketchy this early in the season.
I’m leaning toward Brandon just because he should get touches. Who knows how Vincent will respond against the Bears?
Leon – Jones or Taylor as your RB2? Oi! Both players have mediocre matchups this week, so I would probably go with Jones, who figures to get most of the work between the 20′s for the Cowboys. There’s no telling what Minny is going to do with Taylor and Peterson.
JEC – Vernand Morency is back at practice, but it’s difficult to know how much the Packers plan to use him. You could make a case for either Jackson. I guess I’d go with Brandon because he should gain 50-90 yards, catch a few balls, and get the goal line work.
ok i have a question. which RB would you start…Tatum bell or Jamal lewis? jamal is going up against pitt defense..
JP – I’ve got a solution for your Vince Young / Jay Cutler Dilemma…
Start Cutler, drop (or trade) Vince and pick up Garrard on waivers for next week!
Any interest in taking me up on a friendly (non-monetary) wager that Garrard outscores Vince in traditional FFL scoring???
Phil – I’d go with Bell this week. KJ is out of the picture and Jamal has a pretty bad matchup. OAK is a tough D in their own right, but they had trouble stopping the run last season, so Bell should have a nice day.
Gator Bait – I am warming up to Garrard. He has a better schedule than Vince and has underrated legs. I still think Young is a great bet to outscore him – so you’re on. 1 pt per 25 yds passing, 4 pts per pass TD, 1 pt per 10 yds rushing and 6 pts per rushing TD. Sound good? What do we do if one gets injured – is that part of the bet?
Paul, should I start Julius Jones or Ladell Betts?
Well, my name is John, but I won’t hold it against you.
JJ seems to be the better start, he is at worst splitting carries with Barber whereas Betts could take a back seat to a healthy Portis, who is probable for Week 1. Plus, DAL has the better rushing matchup with the Giants. (The ‘Skins play a pretty stout Miami D.)
John, I am having trouble with my flex position, and second RB. Right now i have Marion Barber n Berrian starting but on my bench I have Brandon Jackson, Tatum Bell, Lendale White, Should I go with Barber n Bell? Barber n jackson, or Barber n Berrian as I do now???? Thanks BOSS
I definitely think Bell is worth a start this week. As for the other position, it’s a close call between the three. Barber is the most proven, while Jackson and Berrian have some upside. White is also a very interesting play, but there’s no telling how TEN plans to split carries and the Titans face a tough Jags D. I would probably go with Bell and Barber, because Barber *should* get the work around the goal line.
JP – For simplicity sake, let’s just treat all TD’s as 6pts. I agree with the rushing/passing yards.
Injuries? You’re not worried about that thing called the Madden Curse, are you??? Injury = Tough Luck.
If I win, I request the rights to post a “guest” article on scoresreport.com about FFL Sleepers for next season. What do you think? Name your stakes.
If you ask me, this is a pretty even bet. Both QB’s have decent legs, no WR’s, young TE’s and RBBC’s. Jags have the edge on DEF. Vince has the edge on hype.
Nah, you said “standard,” and 4 pts per pass TD is considered the standard. 6 pts would favor Garrard because he is more of a threat to throw than he is to run.
Injury = tough luck, is fine by me, just didn’t want you using that as a crutch when Garrard breaks his leg!
I don’t have the right to dole out guest articles here, but if you win, I’ll see what I can do. Let’s jump off that bridge when we come to it…
Garrard has a lot more help. His running game and defense is much better and his WR corps isn’t good, but it’s better than Young’s. Garrard also has an easier schedule. It will be interesting to watch this throughout the season.
I have 2 rbs Clinton Portis (going against Carolina) and Ahman Green (going against KC) who shud i start for week one?
I’m a little nervous about Portis since he hasn’t played at all in the preseason and is facing a tough D in Miami. Ahman should have a nice game against the Chiefs and is healthy. Go with Green and keep an eye on how WAS handles Portis – maybe you can start him next week.
JP, i hope you will answer question this morning… should I start Patrick Crayton over Plaxico B.?
How do you feel about KC defense? Start them over SD this week? KC is playing against a pretty weak team..Houston
Phil – I’d stick with SD – they play a fairly weak offense as well. HOU has the potential to surprise some people today.
Scorpion – I am as excited as the next guy about Crayton’s prospects this season, but I wouldn’t sit a proven top 20 WR for him until he proves that he’s better. I’d start Burress.
After Week 1…
David Garrard 14
Vince Young 11
Advantage “Gator Bait”…I hate those 4-pt passing TD’s!
I feel pretty good about a 3 point deficit after this week. Young won’t be facing the tough JAX DT every week and Garrard won’t get to face the Titans every week, either.
Hello,I’m involved in a PPR league and really got beat up in the wideouts category in our draft.
Im having a hard time deciding my starting receiver’s.
my options are:
Marvin Harrison(IND)
Joey Galloway(TB)
Kevin Curtis(PHI)
I should note P.Manning is my QB.
Curtis has to be valued a bit more beings he was the #2 receiver in the entire NFC in yards and reception’s last year.
M,Harrison has been hurt and it’s possible the colts as an entire unit start slow this year.
Galloway is in tampa….a unpredictable situation.
please help.
Well, considering Curtis is out indefinitely with a sports hernia, I’m guessing this will come down to the two old guys. Personally, I’d pick the old guy with the elite track record who plays in a far superior offense.
hernia….. OMG! thus why i grabbed him in the 12th.
anyhow.
harrison is going against a strong bears D and coming off knee surgery.
i grabbed antwan randle el. who is coming off injury but going against what i predict to be a very soft giants D.
and then again, Joey galloway.
so: marvin harrison, antwan randle el or joey galloway.
with just week 1 in mind?
I answered your question on our 2008 Week 1 Q&A.
