Jamal Lewis looks good so far in camp. Where should he be drafted?
Jamal Lewis is an interesting player this season. He has gone from an offense with a solid run game to an offense with a suspect run game. He’s just 28 (later this month) and should have a few more seasons on those legs of his. Reportedly, he has looked good in camp and has that trademark quickness that he’s been lacking the last few seasons.
He is currently going 5.07 in 12-team leagues and 6.09 in 10-team leagues. If he looks like his old self in the preseason, expect him to go a round higher. Right now, he’s going about a round later than Ahman Green, who is a nice value in the 4th/5th, depending on the league. If you miss out on Green and Lewis looks good in the preseason, I could see drafting him in the 4th/5th. He is the unquestioned starter in Cleveland and was RB16 last season, so he should be in for a solid yet unspectacular season. The guys that are being drafted near him – DeAngelo Williams, Deuce McAllister, Marion Barber III, Tatum Bell – are all in unsettled situations, so with Lewis you do get stability. One note: he doesn’t catch many passes, so his value takes a little knock in PPR leagues.
JP,
Nice work on the Bullz-eye FFL articles. I spent most of the weekend doing heavy research.
I have the #6 spot in my draft and at this point, I like Rudi Johnson as a nice, safe pick.
Given keepers and previous draft picks, Willie Parker, Ronnie Brown, Reggie Bush and Edge James will be the only other viable options at #6.
I want to see Edge in action because I have a feeling he may settle very nicely into that Cards offense this season.
Thoughts?
If you’re talking about a PPR league, then Reggie Bush is my #1 choice. If you’re in a non-PPR league, Rudi is probably the safest option, though if Willie’s knee issue clears up, I’d go with him. I’m not high on the Cards O-line right now, and it would take one hell of a preseason to convince me to take Edge over Rudi, Willie or Reggie, even in a non-PPR league. Ronnie Brown is interesting, but I’d rather have those three right now.
JP, I’m in a non-keeper PPR league and I’m selecting #4. I have no damn clue what I’m going to do there.
Clearly, LT and SJax will be gone. There’s a decent chance LJ will still be there. I’m thinking I’ll be deciding between Gore, Addai and (if he’s there) LJ. Alexander would seem to be in the mix too, but I’m not all that high on him this year, especially in a PPR league.
So between the remaining three backs, Gore and Addai both play in much better offenses than LJ, plus with LJ there’s his holdout and last year’s workload to worry about. All things being equal, I’d likely take Gore in this situation but I’m never a fan of taking an injury liability in the first round, especially in the top-five. Which brings me to Addai, but he has his own questions and #4 just seems too high to take him.
So whaddya think?
According to the NFL Network, the Chiefs have made “major progress” with LJ, so I would now feel much better about taking him #3. Still, it’s not a sure thing, so if you want to go a bit safer, the choice is between Gore and Addai. (I’m not high on Alexander either. Also, there’s the Priest Holmes factor.) I think both Gore and Addai are injury risks, so I would go with the more proven back, Frank Gore. He has proven he can carry the load, and Addai hasn’t (yet). Guys that come off of 2,000-yard seasons generally do pretty well the following season (41% have at least 1,800-yard seasons, 60%+ have at least 1,500-yard seasons), so Gore should be in line for a nice season. Still, it’s very close, so if your gut is saying Addai, then go with it. Assuming they stay healthy, they’re both going to have big seasons.
JP,
Everytime I ask you for advice about a RB, one of his lineman goes down with an injury within hours. Looks like the Cards just lost their starting OT and will have to rely on a rookie this year. At this point, I’m going to have to agree with that Cards o-line being suspect.
I heard a good line on ESPN News today in their fantasy preview, “You may not be able to WIN your league with your first round pick alone but, you CAN lose it. When in doubt, go with the safe option and take risks later in the draft.”
I think this would lead me to stick with Rudi unless someone steps up huge in the next few weeks or a better RB slips down to me.
I like Rudi, but if Parker is healthy, I’m going with “Fast” Willie.
Jay Cutler and Alex Smith looked sharp tonight…
Smith made some incredibly tight throws coming right at Champ Bailey to start things off plus he finally has a true 1WR in D. Jack. Cutler seems to have that “it factor” and a nice bond with J. Walk.
What do you expect from each of these young QB’s this season? Are they reliable enough to be QB1′s? I’m intrigued but not completely sold. Where do you see them coming off the board?
I like both players. Cutler is going 8.07 in Antsports 12-team drafts which makes him QB13 and a borderline starter. Smith is going 10.08 which makes him QB18. The reason for the difference is Cutler’s TD rate last season. If he’s able to match it, he’s looking at 29 TD, whereas Smith was mediocre, finishing as QB20 in ’06.
Cutler might struggle a bit now that defenses have had a full offseason to gameplan for him, but he looks like the real deal and we all know that DEN offense is tough when it’s firing on all cylinders. Smith should benefit from the addition of Darrell Jackson and a healthy Vernon Davis. I expect both players to outperform their draft position a bit, with Cutler finishing around QB11 or QB12, behind Hasselbeck, while Smith should pass Delhomme and possibly E. Manning (unless he takes a step forward), finishing around QB15.
I have the same question as above, but w/ a different take & now updated info:
I too have pick #4. Obviously LT & S.Jackson are 1 & 2, & one of the following won’t likely be there. Now knowing that LJ has signed, & taking into account that the word is S.Alexander is being worked/ used in a lot more pass players in camp t/y (to avoid taking all the punishment yet staying on the firld), & Gore w/ his broken hand (& prev. knee issues) has yet to start for more then 1 yr,…
Who is the #4 as of today?
I don’t put Addi up there yet, so lest keep is between: LJ/ Gore/ Alexander.
(1 pt/ 4 rushes, 1 pt/ 2 rec, 2 pts 25 yds for both, & 5 pts all TD’s)
I’m not particularly high on Alexander this year, so I would rank it LJ then Gore. If Gore were healthy, I might consider him over LJ, but now that Johnson is back, he’s my #3 in the scoring format you outlined.
would it be advisable to dump eddie kennison and take a chance on a rookie like ted ginn, dwayne bowe, dwayne jarret, anthony gonzalez,or robert meachem?
Of that group, I think Gonzalez is most immediately able to help in PPR leagues. He is listed third on the depth chart in Indy, which is probably better than being WR1 in KC. It doesn’t appear that any of the other WRs (save for Bowe, maybe) is set to make an immediate impact.
Ok, im in the later rounds and i need two receivers: one as a solid starter, and the other as a good bench player. my best choices available are issac bruce, ronald curry, patrick crayton, and mike furrey. which two should i go with?
I wouldn’t want to start Bruce regularly, but I think he’s your best option of that group. I like Patrick Crayton’s upside, especially if Terry Glenn continues to miss time. Glenn is getting older and Crayton is ready for that #2 role. Furrey is a possibility, but only in a PPR league. His targets are going to go way down with Calvin Johnson on board.
Ok. My draft is this Sunday…im almost betting that my pick is going to be 7th or 8th out of 10…..if so, do you recommend me picking up the best QB or WR since the RB’s that will be left when it is my turn to pick will be mediocre at best?
Phil – It depends entirely on the players available and your league’s scoring system. I picked Peyton Manning in a recent 12-team league at #10, but only after LT, Jackson, LJ, Gore, Westbrook, Bush, Addai and Parker were gone. If one of those eight players is there, I’d jump on them, especially in a PPR (points per reception) league. In a standard league, I’d add Alexander and Rudi to that list of RBs. You should be able to get a good RB at #7 or #8.
In a 10-team league, you’re probably best off going RB, RB with your first two picks because there will be some very good WRs (Houshmandzadeh, Walker, Colston, Evans, Andre Johnson, etc.) available in the third and fourth rounds.
JP, I’ve got two questions for you.
1: I’m in a TD-heavy league that drafts tomorrow afternoon, picking ninth out of 12. TDs are 6 pts but you don’t start accumulating points for yardage until your RB or WR hit s75 yds (1pt). Then, it’s 1pt for every 25 yards after that. I’ve got eight backs I’m looking at:
LT
SJax
LJ
Gore
Addai
Alexander
Rudi
Parker
After that, it’s a crapshoot. I’m hoping one of those eight (clearly, I’m not sniffing the top 5 guys) will fall, but if not I’m probably looking at Travis Henry or Laurence Maroney at #9. The darkhorse, though, is Brandon Jacobs. In this format, I think he could be a beast, especially since his potential for lower yardage games would be minimized by the scoring system. Am I reaching for him at #9? There’s a decent chance he could be there in the second for me, which would be great, but I think there’s equally as good of a chance that someone will snag him before I come back up in the second.
2. Torry Holt’s injury has me concerned, so concerned in fact that I just traded Holt/Rudi for Fitz/Bush in a PPR league. I’m thinking Bush should outscore Rudi in this format and that I’d rather have 100% of Fitz than 80% of Holt, but it’s definitely a gamble. What do you think?
1) I think Jacobs will probably hang until 2.04, so I would go with Maroney or Henry there. I prefer Maroney, just because I have a natural resistance to taking any DEN RB too early. Bush is another option. I think he’ll be much more involved in the redzone and should score 10-12 TDs counting the ones through the air. Jacobs is going in the 3rd/4th of most leagues, so I think he’ll be there at 2.04 for you. If not, Henry, Jones-Drew or Benson become interesting fallbacks.
2) I love that trade in a PPR league. I’ve been leery of Holt all preseason and the latest news is very bad considering how long ago he had the surgery. I think you got an upgrade at both positions. Bush is much more valuable than Rudi in a PPR league and Fitz should have at least a slightly better season than a hobbled Torry Holt.
I’ve got a couple questions. Who would you take for 2nd QB…Damon Huard or Jeff Garcia. I’ve got Bulger as my primary and need a QB to fill in for bye week. Also, what do you think about Jamal Lewis…does he have any more gas left? Do you think he’ll perform at Cleveland?
Huard played well last season, and could shine again this year, but he’s off to a slow start with a calf injury and hasn’t played very well in the preseason. Jeff Garcia would be my choice because he has an easier game during Bulger’s bye and should generally do pretty well under Gruden.
By most accounts, Jamal Lewis has had a very nice camp and looks to be a solid pick in the 5th or 6th round (of a 12-team league). He’s not going to win you any games on his own, but he should provide 70-100 total yards and 0.5 TD per game. I’m seeing a number of fantasy owners draft him as their RB2 after taking a back in the first and then loading up on WR talent in rounds 2-4. The nice thing about Lewis is you know what you’re going to get, and there isn’t a whole lot of risk involved with the pick.
If you miss out on him, LaMont Jordan is another good option at that point in the draft.
Hi,
My first QB is Jon Kitna, should I be concern?
My back-up QB is Grossman, should I start him instead?
Thanks!
Would you start Plaxico over Mark Clayton and Drew Carter?
I’m concern about his back and Eli Manning’s consistency, also their O-line.
Would love your advice. Thanks!
Hey Scorpion – I posted some answers on our Week 1 Q&A.
I have to start 2 RB’s (Gore,Portis,T.Bell, or L.Jordan). I am leaning to Gore & Jordan wk 1. Thoughts?
Also, I need 2 WR’s (M.Harrison, R.Moss,Cotchery,D.Bennett, & Porter). I am thinking the obvious of Harrison & Moss, unless word is Moss will be limited, then I am lost. Who do you play #2?
Lastly, wk 1, I would be safer going McMichael over JT Smith @ TE, correct?
