The St. Louis Cardinals will try to defend their World Series title by taking on the New York Mets tonight at 8:15pm ET on ESPN2. Do the Cards have enough to repeat? Will the Mets put it all together and give St. Louis a run for its money? Will the injury to Kenny Rogers hurt the Tigers chances for a AL title repeat?

Thats a lot of baseball information to retain on opening day. Good job – whoever dug up all this information. I looked for a long time and the only thing I disagree with is I think the Diamondbacks will finish higher than predicted. That division can be had. And also the Roger Clemens factor could throw a wrench into some division thats for sure – but who knows right now ?
Yank$ vs Met$ in Subway $eries ………. just my opinion.
Thanks for reading Bay24! I take great pride in my previews and I’m glad that you thought the information was not only useful, but plausible too.
I think you can blow the doors off of the NL West, because all five teams are contenders. As I wrote in the preview, any five of those teams could finish 1-5 by the time the season is over. They all have flaws and all have that “what if?” potential.
Great point about Clemens…we’ll have to see which of the five teams he lands on and who’s willing to give him a situation like Houston did over the past few years.

I also read the great deal of information you provided on Buillzeye and loved it all because it shows all of the options outt here this year. I do have a few picks differenent and we’ll watch and see what happens this year.
I like the Cubs, Dodgers and Mets………..NL
I like the Yankees, Twins and Angels…..AL
The wildcard is just that this year……..but Indians and Phillies come to mind real fast for me.
I’m going for a Dodger vs Yankee World Series this year……..for old times and the Yankee gets # 27…….but then again I’m a Yankee Fan, what else would I say.
Big Stienny,
Glad you liked the preview! I like your predictions too…we’ll have to see who comes out on top five months from now.
I really like the Indians and Phillies this year. I’m not as sold on the Twins, only b/c I don’t know if Morneau and Mauer can do what they did again last year PLUS make up for losing what Fransico Liriano brought to the team. They’re still a solid ballclub though.

AS…GREAT stuff on America’s pasttime!! It’s great to see a writer with the guts to mention steroids in their preview (how can you not?) when most guys just avoid the topic altogether for fear of offending someone in the league.
No, we won’t have a Pirates-Royals world series but both of those teams are loaded with young talent which more times than not, seems to win in the majors.
I like the Reds this year. Griffey will get hurt but Josh Hamilton is a caged tiger waiting to prove all the skeptics wrong about his past. I’ve read at least 6 players and scouts saying “he’s the best I’ve ever seen…ever!” and he’s going to pick up the slack and prove his worth. The Mets will be tough in the regular season but will fade in the postseason with their ancient pitching staff and go out like lambs in October. The Dodgers will win the west because nobody else wants to. Barry Bonds suffers a season ending injury before he breaks the record. The Padres have the mix of young and experienced talent to win the wildcard.
The Yankees are the Yankees. I think the Indians may have the magic but they’re bullpen is a mess. The Angels may be the best team in baseball with their balance of pitching and offense. The Blue Jays will surprise and win the wildcard but they’re a year away. The Angels will be done in from October heroics by A-Rod. Yes, you read that right. A-Rod.
Champion Yankees…the Reds can wait one more year!
T-Bone,
I really appreciate the kind words on mentioning the steroid talk. Although, as you noted, how could you not? It’s amazing how so many writers still avoid the topic when it’s sadly been a part of the game for years now. Maybe someday I won’t even have to think about including it in a preview, but for now, it’s just the harsh reality of the sport.
I love the Reds pick! Now that’s going out on a limb! Hamilton is certainly one of those guys to keep an eye out for and a guy that could start turning heads in the early months of the season. I think Bonds is on everyone’s short list to get injured before the record, but really, do we want to see this guy again in ’08? You know the Giants will bring him back if he sniffs a decent season…their organization is extremely weak (just look at how they brought him back this year).
I actually think the Mets are primed and ready this year. I really like the Angels too, in fact, I had them facing the Mets in the WS in my first draft. But I changed it to the Tigers before Kenny Rogers got hurt because I absolutely love Detroit’s pitching…although their bullpen looks like a disaster early on.
We’ll have to periodically check back on everyone’s predictions throughout the year…

While it’s very very early one can’t help but note the Mets sweep of the Cardinals. I’m thinking that Tony LaRussa needs a drink about now. They all come out of spring training wired up for the new year, you’re the Champs and you bomb three days in a row? Hmmmmm, will Tony be there in the end?
As for the Red’s……………..sorry, can’t pick them yet.
ha! Now THAT is stirrin’ up the pot! We’re 3 days into the season and Tampa is considering firing LaRussa because of a season opening sweep? Who are you, George Steinbrenner before he needed drool cup and a diaper?
I’m not a big LaRussa fan, but he JUST WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. I think he’s got enough goodwill with management to earn himself at least one more year.
T-Bone,
I didn’t say to fire the guy………what I realy said was that they bombed in NY, Tony got pinched for a DUI in Tampa Florida and keep your eye him and the Cardinal as the year goes on. Tony can go, he’s not protected out there at all.
