J.D. Drew to Boston? Good luck
So, the Boston Red Sox have signed J.D. Drew, huh? And gave him a five year contract for $70 million? I hope for Drew’s sake that he brings a lunch because Boston is no picnic.
The fact of the matter is Drew was run out of Los Angles by the media. Whenever the L.A. media questioned Drew for poor play, his scoffing attitude and bubbling personality never went over too well. His injury history would make Fragile Fred Taylor blush. Now he wants to play in Boston? Newsflash for J.D. Drew: the Boston media isn’t anywhere near L.A.’s, my man. The media in Boston is intelligent, well prepared and never lays off the gas pedal. Drew better have an answer ready for when he goes 0 for 4 or when he’s out 15 games for a hangnail. They’re going to question why Drew got a five-year deal for $70 million when Theo Epstein said that was too much for fan favorite Johnny Damon a few years ago.
Not that Drew isn’t a talent, because he very much is. But if the Red Sox end up trading Manny Rameriz, Drew is going to fold like a tent as a centerpiece in the Boston lineup. Look at A-Rod in New York. All the talent in the world can’t save you from the claws of the media if you don’t have the Tom Brady or Derek Jeter personality.

I think this guy will be ok as long as Manny and Papi are there – but I would never want him as my featured player. He is an upgrade from Trot because Trot got hurt every year also – but the Sox need this guy to stay healthy. If Manny goes …. this guy might just fold up. Then it will be a huge overpayment. If Manny stays – he hits well, plays good defense – well then it’s worth the money. The money out there these days is stupid and out of control. What is it Monopoly money ?
Excellent points about Drew Bay24. I think the guy is a solid talent, even great sometimes, if he stays healthy. However, you’re right, without Manny and Big Papi in the lineup, Drew doesn’t have the personality to hang with that media.
As a centerpiece, I think it’s only a matter of time before this guy crumbles. As just a cog in the bigger picture, the guy can turn out to be a nice addition.

Yes – and with a better lineup this year – he should be able to just blend in. The first two batters can set the table and finally some speed ( Lugo and Crisp) Papi and Manny for power, then D.L. Drew ( he should get a lot of good pitches here ). After that it’s Lowell and Youk – these guys both have high on base percentages – and throw in a Willie Mo Pena in the mix …… you can see how he can filter in the mix and just be a player – not a superstar, which he is really not. Keep the pressure and media off of him and he may work out well.
I get dizzy watching Boston operate, not that I’m a fan of their’s by any means but
Coco The Crisp is not that good, Manny is a poor excuse for a fielder and J D Drew’s best days are behind him. While my beloved Yankee has been know to make some stupid choices If I’m a Boston Fan I’m getting nervious.
I do not see that Theo is in charge, this is not his spending or talent style.
Who’s calling the shots up there in Bean Town?
I enjoy it when Yankee fan critiques other teams. Like they know what they are doing. Please keep worrying about the Red Sox ………. and somebody else will beat you.
