It appears that the Browns are sold on their quarterback situation being in the hands of second year youngster, Charlie Frye. Late Thursday Cleveland sent Trent Dilfer to the 49ers in exchange for backup quarterback Ken Dorsey and a seventh round pick.
“Trent was a player we had interest in last season,” 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. “We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers.”
In Dilfer, the 49ers have an insurance policy in case Alex Smith continues to struggle grasping the nuances of the NFL. In Dorsey, the Browns make the statement that Frye will be their man in ’06.
“Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year,” Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. “At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties.”
Are Browns fans excited that the future is now in Cleveland?

How good is Dorsey? I think the Browns might need another veteran backup.
It’s too bad to see Trent go, he’s one of the few class guys in the NFL. He’s one of the hardest workers in the NFL and even though he’s spent his whole career with sub par talent(and coaching) he was always the team first guy who never berated his team mates even though any failures he’s had should be placed more on them than him. I wish him the best in SF and I hope Frye chokes on the false confidence the browns have given him.
The Niners are getting a *sweet* deal on this one. Mike Nolan is pulling the right strings, and finally I can trust the Niner’s front office. This will make sure Alex Smith works for his starting job, and Dilfer seems to be a really good mentor (See: Matt Hasselback).
Dont hate on Charlie Frye. HE will be good this year. Also, we have made a lot of improvements in our offence with Joe J. and also with our Defence, Willy M.
Browns fans are like no other fans. We are loyal!
I HATE THE STEELERS!
Dilfer was not going to win us many games and Frye has to be given the chance to develop. With Cincy and Pittsburgh so strong now, having a chance to compete for the wild card would be great. Now let’s get the running game going already!!
