I was reading the baseball news today and began to smile when I read that Major League Baseball sponsors are going to boycott Barry Bond’s new records this year. In my opinion, Barry Bonds is guiltier of using steroids than most active players today. He has been avoiding the controversy and letting everyone else take the fall. The amount of growth and power in his body is unprecedented.
Baseball’s image as a whole was taking a dive because Barry continued to break records and avoid investigations. It’s a sad day in baseball when the companies that sponsor the game show more integrity than the game itself. Barry Bonds should retire and take all of his “tainted” records with him.

The worst part of all is that he didn’t need to do this. His numbers were freaking incredible up to and including the 1998 season. At the same time, I think the advertisers are being a bit disingenuous if they claim any moral high ground here. They were perfectly happy to slap their names on any ballpark while these guys were hitting dingers by the pound. For them to claim to be shocked and appalled by this news “revelation” is a joke.
I was also happy to see sponsors fleeing – but that is just not enough for me, I am boycotting the 2006 MLB season – you can read my reasons here if you are interested:

The sponsors don’t have clean hands, but at least they have a breaking point.
The idea of celebrating Bonds breaking these records is a complete joke. They better get him suspended before he taints the game any further.
